William Tyler Munson (Bill), loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend to many passed away peacefully Wednesday, December 11, 2019 at his home with his family by his side. Bill was born December 6, 1930 to Will and Jessie Munson in Sunnyside, WA.
After graduating from Sunnyside High in 1949, Bill enlisted in the Navy and served our country as a sonar operator during the Korean War. He was proud of his military service and kept in touch with many of his shipmates through the years and enjoyed traveling to their reunions.
Upon returning home from the Navy, Bill met the love of his life, Janice Trelstad. They married on December 30th, 1955 and began a journey together that lasted for 64 years. Soon after, Bill and Janice started their family of three boys, Bart, Tyler, and Todd.
Bill worked hard to attain his education. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Colorado State College and a Master’s degree in education from Indiana University.
Bill and Janice settled in Selah, WA where they raised their family and Bill began his 27 year career with Yakima Valley College. As if that wasn’t enough, Bill and Janice purchased an orchard soon after and balanced two careers for years.
Bill had many interests. He loved to hunt and fish and enjoyed many years of pheasant hunting with his two brothers and their boys. He also took his family fishing whenever he got the chance. His entire family have many great memories with Bill leading the way on hunting, fishing, hiking, skiing, and numerous other outdoor activities.
Bill spent over 30 years as a volunteer ski patrolman at White Pass and was awarded “Patroller of the Year” during his tenure. He also ascended to the summit of Mt. Rainier. All of these activities never got in the way of attending his son’s many sporting events. His family was everything to Bill.
After retiring and selling his orchard, Bill turned his attention to the American Red Cross. He gained his EMT certification and assisted in working with ambulance crews as well as transporting fellow veterans to various medical facilities around the state. Bill was always first in line when it came to volunteering his time and skills to many organizations locally and regionally.
Bill is preceded in death by his parents, Will and Jessie Munson as well as brother’s Ray and Bob. He is survived by his lifelong partner, Janice, and his three sons, Bart (Wendy), Tyler and Todd (Kim). He was a proud grandfather of Travis, Tyler, Kayte, Billy, Josh, and Alex. He also got to spend quality time with his great grandchildren Tucker, Talen, and Axten.
William Tyler Munson. A great man with a big heart who leaves a legacy that will not be matched. He will be missed by many.
