Valerie Joy Smartlowit Twot Nuk Mi Choosh Talaki (Good Medicine Water Lady) May 2, 1967 – May 31, 2024 Valerie Joy Smartlowit, 57, of Toppenish, passed away at her home on May 31, 2024, at 10:15 PM, surrounded by her family and friends. Valerie was born on May 2, 1967, in Toppenish, Washington, to Wilma Randall-Brown and Albert Brown. Valerie graduated from Wapato High School and pursued further education, obtaining many certifications throughout her college years. She touched many lives with her kindness and dedication. Valerie married Wayne Smartlowit on May 3, 1998, and together they built a loving family and home. Valerie was a beloved wife, loving mother, grandmother, sister, auntie and friend. She is survived by her husband, Wayne Smartlowit; her children, Marvin Martinez III, Kevin Smartlowit, Kurtis Smartlowit, Dru Moses, and Tasha Washsise; her grandchildren, Bryanna Broncheu, Kyleigh Martinez, Jaelynn Maass, Serenity Smartlowit, and Izabel Numkena; her sisters, Elizabeth Hartgrove, Melinda Caye, Nanette Robinson, Colleen Randall, Florine Marie Randall, and Alberta Brown; and her brothers, Charlie Randall, Elray Compo, Rudy Macias, and Eugene Compo. She was preceded in death by her parents, Wilma Randall-Brown and Albert Brown; her adopted parents, Ted and Nettie Moses; her sister, Caroline Brown; her brother, Radar Brown; her sons, Nicholas Martinez and Kyle Smartlowit; and her daughter and her daughters husband, Wilma Martinez-Brown-Numkena and Kevin Numkena. Valerie was a master bead worker, and seamstress. She taught many how to sew and bead. She created many indigenous regalia throughout her life for her family and friends. She also enjoyed canning many meats and vegetables and gardening her own foods. Valerie was also a professional gambler and VIP at many casinos. She enjoyed traveling the stick game and pow wow circuit, where she made many cherished memories. Valerie had a heart open to many and raised numerous children throughout her life, providing them with love, guidance, and support and structure. Valerie's career included serving the elders at AAOA as an events coordinator, where she hosted many elder dinners and activities for elders from diverse backgrounds. Even outside of work, she remained active, assisting at Nettie's sewing shop, working at concessions at stick game events, contributing at Spili-Yi Floral Gifts and Collectables, and serving as a MedStar driver and event staff flagger. She also worked at Nettie's Boom City fireworks stand for many summers and was a dedicated caregiver for Delores Yarra for many years. Valerie's hard work and dedication were evident throughout her life. To the loved ones left behind, We would like to share the final arrangements for our beloved mom, Valerie Smartlowit. On June 4th, 2024, Tuesday Morning we will have the Dressing at the Valley Hills Funeral Home, Zillah, Washington, at 10 AM. We will then Transport her To the Independent Shaker Church in White Swan. There will be a Lite Lunch At noon, a Dinner At 5 PM, followed by services (including 7 Drums and Shaker, along with other denominations). On June 5th, Wednesday morning we will have a lite Breakfast At 7 AM, followed by services and the last viewing. We will then take her to her final Resting Place the Toppenish Creek Cemetery, where she will be laid to rest next to her loved ones who have passed on before her. Valerie's life was a blessing to all who knew her, and she will be deeply missed.
