Surrounded by his family Thomas M. Grady, 80, of Sunnyside WA passed away peacefully on November 12, 2013. He was born to the late Bill and Alice Grady in Ruthven, IA on January 15, 1933.
After high school graduation and shortly before his 18th birthday his father signed for him so he could enlist into the Air Force. After proudly serving our country as a radio mechanic during the Korean War, Tom was honorably discharged from the military and attended Seattle University on the GI Bill. While at Seattle University, he met the love of his life Marvella Hauge. Tom and Marvie were married in 1956 and were blessed with seven children.
Tom was a long-time member and past Exalted Ruler of the Elks Club. He was an active parishoner of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus. Along with his wife, he was an entrepreneur who owned Valley Office Supply and Hallmark Shop as well as a car dealership along Yakima Valley Highway.
Tom was an Irish charmer with sparkling blue eyes and a quick wit. He loved fishing with his grandchildren on the lake and considered his children, and their successes, his greatest achievement. Among Tom’s favorite past times was sitting down at the card table for a game of poker or bridge. In his retirement he would declare he was “going to work” as he headed out to the Casino. We know he already has a game going in heaven, watch your money clips boys.
He was preceded in death by his son, Thomas Murphy Grady Jr.; both parents, and siblings Mary Ginsbach, Bill Grady, Ethel McManus, Kay Harris and Pat Grady. He is survived by his wife Marvella Grady of Sunnyside, one sister Terese Simonson of Texas and children Micki Jacobs (Rick) of Spokane, Tamera O’Hara (Stephen) of Arleta, Ali Schoos (Gil) of Bellevue, Terese Moon (Steve) of Silverdale, Jim Grady (Colette) of Pacifica CA and Shannon Martsolf (Troy) of Seattle; 20 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.
