Tarleton “Tobe” Louis Maddox
Our amazing dad, Tobe Maddox was in this world for 95 years. He was born October 2, 1921 at home in Shackleford County, Texas to John and Minnie Maddox. He passed on Augst 26, 2017 at Cottage in the Meadow. His father passed when dad was 2 years old, so his mother and 6 children traveled to Sunnyside to live with other family members. Later moving to Yakima, he had to drop out of his 11th grade year at Yakima High School to help provide for his family.
He was unable to serve in WWII because of his poor vision. Dad always felt bad about not being able to serve.
Dad met Jeanne Weeks in 1940 and soon thereafter married. They had 5 children, 2 boys and 3 girls. At that time he started meat cutting and continued until his retirement at the age of 62 years. In 1971 Dad married the love of his life Gloria Talcott Lewis. She had 2 girls and 2 boys. They loved each other so much. Gloria passed unexpectedly in 2009. A very difficult time for Dad.
Our family had a boat in the late 50’s-70’s and we spent a lot of time on the Columbia River. In the 1980’s and 90’s Dad and Gloria spent 12 winters in Mission, Texas. They loved to travel and visited many states together,
Dad’s passions were watching baseball and playing golf. While watching ball games Dad always enjoyed his gin and tonic and cigar! Through the summer of 2016 he was still playing 18 holes of golf. Dad was full of charm, intelligence, wisdom and a huge heart.
Tobe is survived by his children: Catherine Caldwell, Kelly Ford (Ed), Karen Ridley (Pat), Vicki Rudd, Brian Lewis (Chris), Bruce Lewis; and numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by three of his children: Tobe Maddox, Jr., Rebecca Allen and Richard Maddox.
The family would like to thank all of the doctors, nurses and private caregivers who treated our dad with dignity and respect. Thanks so much to Maricruz Arredondo. Kim Castro who took care of Dad 24/7 the last few weeks, a big thank you! The staff at Cottage in the Meadow are gentle caring people, thank you. Dad is now with a lot of family he hasn’t seen in a long time.
“Rest well, Dad. We love you so.”
At Dad’s request, no service will be held.
