Shirley Butler

June 14, 1927 — June 5, 2016

Shirley Anne Butler passed away at Cottage in the Meadow in Yakima, Washington, on Sunday, June 5, 2016. She moved to Yakima after retiring in 1989 from her work at Tektronix, Inc., the Beaverton, Oregon developer and manufacturer of electronic instruments. She was preceded in death by her parents Lillian Hibbard Butler and Harold Sylvester Butler, by two of her sisters, Jean Burget and Barbara McAllister, by her former spouse Dave Anderton, by daughter Katherine Anderton, by two infant sons, and by grandchild Augustin Anderton. Shirley was born on June 14, 1927, in Portland, Oregon. Her family briefly lived in Spokane, Washington before returning to Portland. In 1945 Shirley graduated from Grant High School and went on to attend Willamette University. In 1949 she married Dave Anderton and raised eight children. She is survived by her children Gregory Anderton of Portland, Oregon; Nanci Anderton of Newport Beach, California; Mark (Jennie) Anderton of Chiloquin, Oregon; Julie-Blaine of Beaverton, Oregon; Matthew (Erin) Anderton of Yakima, Washington; Joseph (Diane) Anderton of Seattle, Washington; and James Anderton, of Los Angeles, California. She is also survived by 20 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, 20 nieces and nephews, numerous great-nieces/nephews, and her sister, Agatha (Samuel) Czuba of Portland, Oregon. Shirley had an abundance of love, care and concern for her children, her three sisters, and all of their families. She thoroughly enjoyed the outdoors and harbored a great affection for animals, but was especially fond of dogs, cats, birds, and the friendly (and always hungry) neighborhood raccoons. She was a devoted mother and often loaded the kids and family dogs into the car for outings to different beaches, mountains, lakes, rivers, and waterfalls. While Shirley enjoyed camping, skiing, hiking, and travel, she also enjoyed drawing, painting, woodcarving, and listening to fine music. Her faith and sacramental life as member of the Catholic Church was of paramount importance to her and she made pilgrimages to Rome, Jerusalem, and Betania, Venezuela. She was very active in prayer and ministry at St. Paul Cathedral and St. Joseph Catholic Churches in Yakima and previously at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Portland. A memorial celebration of Shirley’s life will be held at Living Care Retirement Community in Yakima on Thursday, June 23, 2016 at 2:00 pm. Shirley’s remains will be interred at Mt. Calvary Catholic Cemetery in Portland, Oregon at a later time. Shirley and her family are grateful for the abundance of care provided by the Living Care Retirement Community, HeartLinks Hospice, and Cottage in the Meadow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to any of her care providers, Catholic Relief Services, or any of Shirley’s parish communities.
