Athliatanii, Sharon Jo Hill gave cancer a good bout and ultimately entered the kingdom of Heaven April 24, 2023.
Born August 24, 1962 to Helen and Joe Hill in Toppenish, WA. Sharon was the fifth born out of ten children. A member of the Yakama Nation and a descendant of the Muskogee Creek Nation. She moved back and forth from the Yakama Reservation and Oklahoma with her parents and siblings. In school she ran track, cross-country and also played basketball. She graduated from Wapato High School in 1980. She was Washington's Birthday Celebration Queen, contestant for Miss NCAI and Miss Indian America. Soon after she attended Haskell Junior College in Lawrence, KS.
A servant of the people, her training began as a young girl from her Aunties and Grandmas at the Longhouse. Athliatanii, made her mother and family proud when she enlisted in the Marine Corps. She was stationed overseas in Okinawa, Japan. After being honorably discharged, Sharon moved home to the Yakima Valley.
She had an exemplary career with the Yakama Nation. Her career started with St Jacks at Liberty Theater. She worked for Cultural Resources, Department of Natural Resources, Finance, and lastly served as a commissioner for the Yakama Nation Gaming Commission. More recently, she graduated from Yakima Valley College with an Associates of Arts in Business 2020.
Honoring our sacred foods sacrifice she was a food gatherer of roots and berries. Sharon took pride in teaching all the Hill girls how to gather, can and preserve the foods. She loved camping and cooking over a campfire.
She was instrumental in many activities and groups throughout her life. She was a womens short fringe dancer and went viral when her video of her dancing in her women’s veterans special broke the internet. A member of the All Tribes Christian Life Center, Toppenish, Wapato Longhouse, and the Yakama Warriors Association.
Sharon is survived by her daughters Cheyenne Ganuelas, Sian Schuster. Sons Jason Logie and Albert Squeochs. Grandchildren Deja, DezMarie, Dreya, Alexandria-Rose Sandoval and Kevin Ganuelas. Sister Espoke (Stuart) Jim. Aunts Phyliss Littlebull, Rosemary Miller, Shirley Criqui, and Matilda Smiskin. Uncles Stanley MIller, Melvin (Mary) MIller, Harry (Jeanne) Smiskin, Wotko Long (of Oklahoma) Pastors Ann Thompson and Donna Konopasek, sister friends Esther Moses-Hyipeer and Dora Goudy Smith. Numerous nephews, nieces, great-nephews and nieces who were all her kuthla’s and ullas. She is preceded in death by her parents Joe and Helen Miller HIll. Sisters Chumila Hill, Hazel Hill, and Madeline Hill. Brothers David Hill, Wilburn HIll, Phillip HIll, Vernon HIll and Joe Jr. Grandson Terrance Ganuelas, son in law Kevin Ganuelas, nephews William Hill, Marcus Marsen, Matthew Marsden. Nieces Melinda Hunt, Nikki Bill and Margaret HIll. Maternal Grandparents Antoine and Hazel Smiskin MIller. Paternal Grandparents Tony and Margaret Hill. Uncles Larry Wesley, Orrin Miller Sr., Harry Long. Aunts Jeanette Wesley-Smartlowit, Nadine Miller-Ike, Dette Miller Tahkeal, Leanne MIller-Umtuch, Naomi Miller-Rivas and Bea Hill-Bell.
