Russell Johnson

Russell Elwood Johnson went to be with the LORD and his beloved wife Emma on December 29, 2024. He was born February 6, 1932 In Harold, South Dakota to Viola and Russell Junior Johnson. His love for his country was so strong that he enlisted at 16, lying about his age in December 1948. After completion of his training, his first duty assignment was Hanau, Germany. It was there that he met the love of his life, Emma. Russell's service took him to numerous locations around the world to include Korea (1962), Germany (two tours) and Vietnam (1968). After Vietnam, he returned to Ft. Lewis, WA where he ultimately retired in 1970. Russell received the Bronze star from his deployment to Vietnam. Russell and Emma had five children during their marriage leaving Emma responsible for their upbringing during his many deployments. After his retirement in 1970, he went to work for the Washington state highway department and served them faithfully until his retirement. It was during his tenure with the highway department that he ultimately settled in Wapato WA. When not working, Russell spent time with his family camping, fishing and working endlessly as a farmer on his 10 acres. He taught his children the importance of a good days work resulting in each of his children becoming successful in their future endeavors. He enjoyed riding horses and sharing his mechanical knowledge with the locals. He was always there to provide help. Russell was proceeded in death by his loving wife Emma, parents Viola and Donald Jassman, Sister, Sylvia, Brother, Rodney granddaughter Kasey and great grandson, Cody. He is survived by his children Fred Johnson, Pendleton, Oregon, Joanne Malecki (Ed), Wapato, WA, Rita Westhoff (Bob) Spanaway, WA, Duane Johnson (Mikki), Redgranite, WI and Tammy Billings (Jim), Everett, WA. Grandchildren include Andreas (Heather), Tara (Nathan), Shannon, James, Kristen, Kelly, Leah, Jamie, Jeremy and Michael. Great grandkids include, Max, Olivia, Anna, Leo, Connor, and Emma. A special thanks goes out to Dorothy Gratchner his pen pal who always put a smile on his face. Rest In Peace our beloved dad, grandpa, and great grandpa. We love you.
