Ruby Perkins

Ruby L Perkins, 102, of Yakima, peacefully passed away on January 10th, 2016. She was born on July 4, 1913 in Ponoka, Alberta, Canada to Nelson and Hilda Hinkley. The oldest of 9 children, Ruby, was proud to be an American citizen who was born in Canada. Ruby married Arthur “Billy” Perkins in 1931 and they enjoyed over 53 years of marriage until his death in 1984. To this marriage was born 3 daughters, Gwen, Yvonne, and Carol. Ruby was the rock of the family. She enjoyed playing games, penny bingo, computer games, and was a very social person. She never forgot the birthdays of her friends and family, always making a special card for them and enclosing dollar bills that were taped together to form a chain, representing their age. She was a breast cancer survivor in the 1960’s. She worked in the kitchen for many years at Wapato School District and later at Miners Drive In. She enjoyed traveling and toured the country and into Canada. She enjoyed genealogy and traced her family heritage back into the 17th century to a castle in England. Ruby belonged to the First Baptist Church in Union Gap. Ruby enjoyed the 10 years she lived at Sun Towers before she moved in with her daughter Carol, later living for a year at Blossom Place. Ruby is survived by her daughters, Carol Adams, of Wapato, and Gwen Radke, of Yakima, as well as her 5 grandchildren, Sheila, Kay, Tennia, Tony, and Troy (Kelly), and 6 great grandchildren and 14 great great grandchildren. She is also survived by her brothers, Ralph Hinkley, of Yakima, Nelson “Curly” Hinkley, of Richland, and her sister, Dorothy Baxter, also of Richland. She is preceded in death by her husband, Billy, her daughter, Billy Yvonne, her brothers, Joe, Ron, and Walter Hinkley , and her sisters, Jean Gough and Pearl James. The family would like to give a special thank you to the staff of Blossom Place. Visitation will be on Saturday & Sunday from 2:00-4:00PM at Valley Hills Funeral Home, Yakima. A graveside service will be at Terrace Heights Memorial Park on Monday at 11:30AM. The family will gather at the Branding Iron in Toppenish following the service.
