Obituary

Rosenetta Ann “Rose” Sanders (née Blankenship), age 74, passed away peacefully on December 5, 2025, in Yakima, Washington. Born on May 9, 1951, in Sunnyside, Washington, Rose lived a life defined by compassion, service, and unwavering generosity.

Rose attended Sunnyside schools and demonstrated an early calling to care for others. She earned her nursing degree in 1969 and embarked on a career that would span decades and touch countless lives. Her professional journey included working alongside Dr. Don Woods in Grandview, Dr. Larry Lafore in Zillah, and Dr. Shearer in Toppenish. She also served at the Grandview nursing home and as a surgical nurse at Sunnyside Hospital. Her dedication to nursing was evident in every role she held.

After retiring from her formal nursing career, Rose continued her life of service by becoming a full-time foster parent with her husband, John Sanders. Together, they opened their hearts and home to 50 foster children over the years—a testament to their boundless love and commitment to nurturing young lives.

Rose’s deep faith guided her throughout her life. A devoted Christian, she worshiped at Home Missionary Church in Sunnyside before later attending Tieton Assembly of God. Her spiritual strength was reflected in her daily actions—always putting others before herself and striving to be “other people’s reason to smile,” as she often said.

She found joy in simple pleasures and creative pursuits. Rose loved sewing quilts that wrapped others in warmth and care. The beach was her happy place—a source of peace where she enjoyed blowing glass and soaking in the beauty of nature. She delighted in baking and experimenting with new recipes, always eager to share her creations with those around her. Gardening brought her joy as well; though she never quite finished it, tending to her plants mirrored the way she nurtured people—with patience and love.

Rose is survived by her devoted husband John Sanders; her mother Barbara Blankenship; and her much loved "granddaughter" Zalia Rose Huizar, for whom she was guardian. She also leaves behind ten nieces and nephews and one great-great-niece who will carry forward memories of her kindness and strength.

She was preceded in death by her beloved daughter Raelee Hicks; her father Loman Blankenship; and her brother Dorman Blankenship.

Rose’s legacy is one of selflessness, compassion, and enduring love. May her memory bring comfort to all who knew her and continue to inspire acts of kindness for generations to come.

Graveside service will be held December 16, 2025 at 11am in the Zillah Cemetery 100 1st Ave, Zillah, WA 98953.
