Robert (Bob) G. VanderSluis, age 94, on July 17, 2013, entered into the arms of Jesus receiving his everlasting eternal reward. He was born May 27, 1919 to Henry & Hattie VanderSluis, in Moxee City, WA. He was the youngest of nine (9) brothers and sisters. He now joins his most beloved wife (Amy) of 53 years, his parents, eight siblings, a daughter and grandson.
Bob was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, mentor, friend and, most importantly, a devoted follower of His Lord and Savior. He quoted many times, “I am not my own, but belong-body and soul, in life and death, to my faithful Savior Jesus Christ”.
He leaves behind a legacy for his family of three sons: Robert (LaRue) Yakima, WA; Bill (Susan) Ogden, Utah and Russ (Gini) Zillah, WA; five grandchildren, Joli (Jon) Pichot of Virginia Beach, Va., Jason (Ami) VanderSluis of Wenatchee, Jennifer (Don) Greve of Spokane, Stacey (Jesse) Benedetti of Yakima and Bryce VanderSluis of Zillah. Also, nine great- grandchildren; Riley, Beau & Haley Benedetti, Candice Ford, David & Evan VanderSluis, Matthew Greve and Hannah and Tyler Pichot.
Many achievements over his 94 years were humble, but solid, serving in the South Pacific WWII, married to the love of his life for 53 years, raising a family with standards and values to pass along to future generations, retired from the US Postal service (41 years), the list goes on and on. Most of all, Dad never wavered from his commitments and high standards, leaving an example with the bar set high, particularly in the area of his unwavering faith and commitment to his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
His favorite verse and motto: Psalm 127 – 1-4: Unless the Lord builds the house, its builders labor in vain. Unless the Lord watches over the city, the watchmen stay awake in vain. It is in vain you rise early and go late to rest, eating the bread of anxious toil; for He gives his beloved sleep. Behold, children are a heritage from the Lord, children a reward from Him. Like arrows in the hands of a warrior are sons born in one’s youth. Blessed is the man whose quiver is full of them. They will not be put to shame when they contend with their enemies in the gate.
The family would like to thank Orchard Park Retirement Center for nine years of joy, Landmark Care Center for their three years of care and Memorial Hospice for their exceptional compassion and care in his last days and Zillah Faith Community Church (of which he was a life-long member).
A memorial will be held at Faith Community Church, 300 W. Centennial Drive, Zillah, on Saturday, August 3rd, 11:00 a.m., followed by a luncheon.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Union Gospel Mission, Sunnyside Christian School or a charity of your choosing.
