Richard C. Scherer, age 77 passed away Saturday, July 16th at Prestige Care and Rehabilitation in Sunnyside WA. Rich was born in Yakima on July 17th, 1938 to Charles and Dorothea (Hudson) Scherer. He was the oldest of three boys and a girl. He attended Yakima schools and graduated from Yakima High School in 1956, during which he played basketball and baseball and also played baseball for the American Junior Legion team in Yakima. He attended YVCC before joing Boise Cascade in 1958.
In 1958 Rich married Barbara Poole with whom he had one daughter, Julie, and a son Brent. His interest in hunting and fishing led him to employment with the Washington State Department of Fish and Wildlife in 1963. He was stationed in Lynden for two years before being transferred to the game range in Mabton WA in 1965. In 1969 Rich married Connie Clune in Sunnyside. Connie had sons Hugh and Zane and a daughter Brenda. The family settled in Sunnyside and had been in the area since that time. He was also a volunteer fire fighter for some time in Sunnyside.
Rich had many good and loyal friends in the agriculture and law enforcement communities and he valued them all. His game department partner of more than 20 years, Jesse Palacios was always there.
Rich was preceded in death by his parents Charles and Dorothea, his wife Connie, as well as step-son Hugh and step-daughter Brenda. He is survived by his sister Sue Dodson (Don), brother Steve Scherer (Linda), brother Doug Scherer (Julie), daughter Julie Cogswell (Bill), son Brent Scherer (Christy Clevenger), and step-son Zane Brewer (Nikki Crawford), as well as numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
The family appreciates the care and dedication the staff at Prestige displayed as well as the support from his many friends and colleagues.
