On the evening of July 4, 2022, Randy Stubbings very fittingly went out with a bang at his home in Zillah, WA. He and twin brother Richard were born on November 21, 1963 in Seattle, WA to Joseph and Gladys (Shungnak) Stubbings. Baby Richard died shortly after birth, and Randy often said that he felt like a part of him was missing.
Randy was a lifelong resident of Zillah, departing briefly for a few years to live in Toppenish, but then back again following his paralysis in a car accident in 1989, the result of a mad-drunk fishing trip at the Yakima River. It was not an easy adjustment for him, and he struggled to cope. He spent most of his life with his parents, having dreamed of taking over the family farm before his paralysis. Randy attended Zillah High School until an unfortunate break-up with a girlfriend of questionable character caused a downward spiral in his mental health. He attended Yakima Valley Community College off and on over the years, earning a counseling certificate in addiction, hoping to become a crisis counselor. Eventually though, constant pain from his back injury tanked his dreams.
Later in life, Randy became a happier version of himself again, meeting a soulmate-best friend and his family, who took him as one of their own, Kevin and Lisa Casseday. It is with huge gratitude that our family thanks them for their love and adoption of Randy. He was an opinionated fellow (got that from his dad) and was never afraid to tell you what he thought, whether you wanted to hear it or not. With a self-deprecating sense of humor, generous to a fault, and a 100% belief that he was always right, he was blessed to have many other cherished friends and neighbors who looked out for him too.
The baby of the Stubbings family, he is reunited in death with about 83% of the clan, dad Joe, mom Gladys, oldest brother Patrick and twin Charles, older brother Rob, and his beloved black lab Nelly Bly. The remainder of the Stubbings dynasty include his sister, Lisa Rothamel, and his nephew Alex of Phoenix AZ. He had a special relationship with nieces Laura and Megan Palachuk of Walla Walla.
Although raised Catholic, alas it did not stick, so in lieu of a service, there will be a celebration of Randy’s life at Scott’s Fuel Yard, 314 1st Ave, Zillah, on Thursday July 14 at 4 pm. Come share a toast to this irascible spirit, swap stories and hold the light for him with gratitude that he was liberated from his failing body on his own terms.
