Phyllis W. Long, 80, of Toppenish, entered into her Heavenly home on January 21 while at Astria Hospital in Toppenish surrounded by family. Phyllis was born December 13, 1938 in Talala, OK to James and Imogene Wornell. When Phyllis was 3 the family moved to Washington state. The most important decision Phyllis made was to accept Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior at a young age while attending a meeting at Wapato Assembly of God. Phyllis attended school in Wapato and Toppenish. She graduated from Toppenish High School in 1957. While in high school Phyllis met her future husband, Bill. After marrying in 1958 Bill and Phyllis spent over 50 years working together in ministry.
A highlight of their ministry was accepting a call to become pastors of the Assembly of God in Brewster, WA. They served there for 22 years, thoroughly enjoying the time spent there. In fact, Phyllis made the comment, “I miss Brewster so much,” when sharing stories the night she entered the hospital on January 7.
After leaving Brewster, Bill and Phyllis worked at churches in Toppenish, Buena, Wapato and most recently, Union Gap - until their health prevented them from active ministry.
Phyllis was preceded in death by her parents; Bill’s parents (Lloyd and Nova Long); one sister, Dorothy Wornell; and one brother, LeRoy Wornell.
Phyllis is survived by her four children: David (Vickie) Long of Yakima; Steve (Radene) Long of Yakima; Janette (Randy) Lint of Toppenish; and John (Sina) Long of Petersburg, VA; one brother, John (Leslie) Wornell of Yakima; 15 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren, with two more on the way; along with numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, many friends and loved ones.
Phyllis’s viewing and visitation will take place at Valley Hills Funeral Home in Zillah from 4 pm to 7 pm on Thursday, January 24th. Her service of memory will take place on January 25th at the Christian Worship Center (204 Cheyne Rd, Zillah), starting at 11 am.
Donations in Phyllis’s name may be made to the Union Gospel Mission in Yakima.
