Phyllis Leach

January 20, 1925 — September 16, 2013

Phyllis Louise Leach, age 88, passed away on Sept.16, 2013 at Crescent Health Care in Yakima. She was born in Yakima on January 20, 1925 to Otto and Lydia (Keller) Haussler at the family home on Summitview and Pear Avenue. Her grandmother was there to help with the delivery. Phyllis attended Wide Hollow grade school, graduated from Cowiche High School in 1943 and attended Yakima Business College. During the war, she worked at Valley Evaporating while waiting for her boyfriend from first grade to return so they could get married. Robert Leach and Phyllis were married September 5, 1946 at Nob Hill Evangelical Church. For the next 60 years, Bob and Phyllis would live a wonderful life. They had 4 children, they farmed in the Zillah area, they owned a trucking business, they collected classic cars, they traveled the world and had a home that they hosted many parties at. Escaping to Hawaii during the winter months became an annual event. Bob and Phyllis were like soup and sandwich. Phyllis loved collecting dolls and even had a room in her house devoted to her collection. Phyllis lost her soul mate Bob in September of 2006 to pancreatic cancer. It is fitting that Bob and Phyllis both pass on September 16. She is survived by her sons Dennis (Susan) of Federal Way, Steve of Zillah, Scott (Lupe) of Zillah and daughter Susie (Bill) VanderSluis of Utah. She is also survived by 9 grand children and 10 great grandchildren who will forever miss ‘Grammy’. A Memorial Service will be held for Phyllis at 11 A.M. Saturday, September 28, 2013 at the Zillah Nazarene Church, 203 Miles Drive, Zillah, with a luncheon following. Valley Hills Funeral Home in Zillah is in care of the arrangements. Online tributes may be left for Phyllis at www.valleyhillsfh.com. In lieu of flowers the family would appreciate donations to Alzheimer’s Association.
