Petra Cantu, lovingly known to many as “Aunt Pat,” was born on October 19, 1938, in Aspermont, Texas, and peacefully entered eternal rest on May 20, 2026.
She is now reunited with her beloved brother and sisters, Ines Cantu, Manuela Mireles, and Salome Gamboa, along with her parents, Eustacio Cantu and Nicolasa Vasquez Cantu.
She leaves behind her loving sisters, Basicilia Rodriguez and Teresa Cantu, as well as many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, extended family members, and dear friends who loved her deeply.
Aunt Pat was truly one of a kind tough, loving, stubborn, funny, and unforgettable. She helped raise generations of children and was known by many as the aunt who taught all the kids how to ride a bike, watched over them while they grew up, and always made sure no one went without love, laughter, or a home cooked meal. Her love extended not only to her nieces and nephews, but also to their friends, who quickly became family the moment they stepped into her home.
In her younger years, Petra enjoyed playing softball as a catcher and as she proudly reminded everyone, she played without a glove. That story perfectly captured who she was: fearless, resilient, and tough as nails while still carrying a heart full of love.
She spent most of her life in Mabton surrounded by the people she loved most. Some of the family’s favorite memories include walks to the Mercado, walking all across town with the kids to her nephew Jr.’s house, relaxing while watching westerns, working on puzzles in her free time, and enjoying an ice-cold Pepsi.
She loved sitting in the shade on warm spring and summer days, teaching her nieces and nephews how to play gin rummy, working on crossword puzzles, and watching passersby as the day went on. Those quiet moments became some of the memories her family will cherish forever.
Her favorite holiday was the Fourth of July. All year long she would have the kids collect coins and spare change in a jar, and when the holiday arrived, she would proudly cash it in to buy fireworks for everyone. Those simple moments became lifelong memories for the family she adored.
She also looked forward to the special Mother’s Day trips and the cherished family getaways where the sisters could spend precious time together, especially visits to the beach that brought her so much joy.
Petra took great pride in her home on Washington Street. She made sure the yard was always beautiful, the edges perfectly trimmed, and everything kept just right. It was one more way she showed her care, pride, and love for the life she built around her family.
Though she could be stubborn and didn’t always like being told what to do, beneath that tough exterior was a woman who dedicated her life to caring for others. She was there to walk kids to school, make sure everyone was fed when they got home, and provide comfort, safety, and love in ways both big and small.
She was loved dearly by many and will be missed more than words can express. The memories she created, the lessons she taught, and the love she gave so freely will continue to live on in all who knew her.
