Melvin Dwayne Zier (“Mel”) will be remembered as a man who loved and cared for his family and friends. He had a great passion and dedication to coaching kids, especially his sons in several sports. Mel, 76, of Yakima, joined our Lord on December 7th, 2016. Mel was born in Yakima, WA on December 14, 1939 to Emma and Dave Zier. He was a 1957 graduate of West Valley High School located on Zier Road in Yakima WA. Mel served in the United Stated Army from 1958 - 1964. Mel and Sandra were married for 40 years. They raised their children and many beloved foster children through the years. Mel was well known in the area for his passion and dedication to coaching Little League Baseball, Grid Kids Football, and AAU Basketball. Mel coached his Little League Baseball team to a City Championship in 1993 and the Yakima Saints Grid Kids Football team to a Championship that same year. He loved spending time watching his kids and grandchildren play sports when he was not coaching them. Mel enjoyed spending time with his family, whether it was at the ball field or traveling around with his wife and kids. After retirement, Mel acquired a love for working in his shop and doing yard work with his “little helper”, granddaughter, Unique Zier. He will be greatly missed by everyone who knew him.
