On May 20, 2015 Medalia Sandoval-Kangas went to be with her Lord surrounded by her loved ones. Medalia “Maya” was born to Eulalio C. Sandoval and Paula M. Martinez on March 9, 1955 in Sunnyside. She graduated in 1974 from Sunnyside High School and soon after she traveled with the Sisters of St Josephs Catholic Church to Aguascalientes, Aguascaliente to serve as a missionary for 14 years. Medalia attended Texas A & I University obtaining a Bachelors degree in Education. After teaching two years in San Antonio, Texas she returned to Washington State accepting employment at the Granger School District as an E.S.L. teacher. Soon after she met and married the love of her life “Richard Kangas,” who was presently a teacher at the same school. They decided to make Sunnyside their home where Mrs. Kangas enjoyed teaching her students and watching them grow, she would call them my little “pollos.” She presently taught kinder at Roosevelt. In younger years Medalia enjoyed swimming, hiking, white river rafting, biking and camping with her “Cardi,” Ricardo. She enjoyed playing the guitar and singing along with her family and friends, she was the life of the party. She had the gift of gab her “Cardi” would say as a result “she was a terrific story teller like no other.” Medalia touched the lives of many people and appreciated her “Comadres,” who always had her back. As a dear friend of hers, Debbie Anderson once said, “She is the kind of friend everyone wishes they had.” She will be greatly missed by all!
Medalia is survived by her husband, Richard Kanges of Sunnyside, two sisters; Gloria Sandoval of Sacramento CA, Margarita (Angel) Sandoval of Sunnyside, three brothers; Rojelio (Lisa) Sandoval Sr. of Snohomish, Ramiro (Patsy) Sandoval of Sunnyside, Antonio (Lori) Sandoval of Hermiston, and numerous amounts of Nieces and Nephews whom she loved dearly.
