Mary Boston

Mary I. Boston, 94, passed away peacefully with family at her side on December 9, 2016 at Regional Hospital in Yakima, WA Mary was born November 21, 1922 in Wapato, WA to Matthew and Elizabeth (Mosbrucker) Wheeler. She started her schooling in Wapato. The family lived near Granger during the Depression years where she completed 2nd through 6th grade. She finished her schooling upon moving back to Wapato, graduating with honors in May of 1941. She attended Business College in Seattle, WA for 5 months, took a Civil Service exam and moved to Washington DC where she worked as a secretary for the "War Production Board" from 1941-1944. She then transferred back to Seattle and worked for the US Treasury Dept. until 1946. Her work career also included secretarial work for St. Peter Claver Church in Wapato, and working at the Employment Security Dept. in Yakima until her retirement in the late 1980s. She met the love of her life, Chris Boston, in 1942 while working in Washington DC. He was a Marine stationed as a guard at the Navy Dept. They were married in Wapato in 1946, and raised a family of five children. They would have celebrated their 71st wedding anniversary on February 22, 2017. Mary loved to cook, and always had food on hand for family and friends who would drop by almost on a weekly basis. She was a gracious and generous hostess. Mary made sure no one ever left hungry, bagging up food to send along with them for their travels. She loved to quilt, and was a member of the Quilting Club at the Yakima Senior Center. She made many beautiful quilts for her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was a gifted seamstress also, and an avid Bridge player. She and Chris enjoyed traveling and camping. They loved to dance, and were president of the "30 30 Club" in 1975. Mary was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary for 65 years. She is survived by their children: Christine (Jon) Bachtold of Walla Walla, Wa; Susan Peltonen of Clarkston, WA; Robert (Shirley) Boston of Olympia, WA; Kathleen Perrault of Yakima, WA; and Janice (Mike) Walker of Longview, WA. She was the proud grandmother of 13 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren. She was proceeded in death by her parents Matthew and Elizabeth Wheeler, and her sisters: Angeline (Paul) Thomas, and Catherine (Larry) Hastings. Viewing will be held on Thursday, December 15, 2016 at Valley Hills Funeral Home in Terrace Heights, Yakima from 3:00pm - 5:00pm with a Vigil Service at 5:00pm. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00am Friday, December 16, 2016 at St. Paul's Cathedral in Yakima. Concluding services and burial will be in Yakima at Calvary Cemetery, followed by a luncheon at St. Paul's School.
