Marian Laurel Newhouse passed away peacefully in her sleep on November 7th, 2023, at the age of 96. She was born July 19, 1927, in Idaho to John and Laverne Linderman. She was one of three siblings.
Marian’s family moved to Sunnyside when Marian was a baby. She was a lifelong resident of the area. She attended Sunnyside schools, graduating in 1945. It was at Sunnyside High School that Marian met David L. Newhouse.
Marian and Dave were married on August 5, 1947. Together they operated Newhouse Dairy and welcomed four children: Joan, David, Ron, and Merilee.
Marian was a devoted wife, mother, homemaker, and friend. Her focus was serving others, especially cooking for her family. She was an excellent pie maker and baker. She preferred staying home, but she would travel with Dave to bowling tournaments around the country and to visit their daughters.
Marian served her community by working on the election board for decades. She was an active member of the Yakima Valley Dairy Wives. For years she volunteered at Sunnyside Christian School especially in the library.
After their children were grown and married, Marian and Dave continued to welcome their family and friends to a weekly Sunday brunch. These wonderful meals were always served on Marian’s Franciscan Apple China.
Extended family was a very important part of Marian’s identity. Marian’s cohort of nine sisters-in-law gathered often to visit. Together they organized fun and special events. Many stories have been told about these gatherings.
Dave’s sudden death in 1997 was heart breaking for Marian. However, she bravely carried on for another 26 years. She continued hosting Sunday brunch, going to church and volunteering.
Marian loved being a grandmother. She spent many hours helping care for her grandchildren when they were young. During the summers she “held court” around the family pool where generations of family and friends gathered. In her later years, she enjoyed her great grandchildren. Tuesday night was her pizza night with her grandson Chris, his wife and their children.
Marian’s family gives thanks to God for her love, service, and a life well lived. Although we are saddened by her loss, we rejoice that she has gone to her final resting place in the arms of her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ
The family would like to give thanks to her dear friend Martina Charvet. Tina was a faithful friend for decades. We would also like to thank her long-time caregiver Esmeralda Amaro for her loving care, as well as Brittney Castro, Sally and Victoria Valencia, and Suzanne Bos for their special care in the last few years of Marian’s life.
Marian is survived by her brother Gene Linderman and her four children: Joan Snow (Bill), David (Patricia), Ron (Sue), and Merilee Winz (Werner). She is also survived by her seven grandchildren: Brian, Randy, Katie, Tyler, Chris, Robyn and Ryan, as well as 11 great grandchildren, with one more on the way.
Marian was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Dave, her sister Edna Mae, and many brothers-in-law and sister-in-law.
A visitation will be held at Valley Hills Funeral Home in Sunnyside, Washington from 2:00 – 4:00 pm on Wednesday, November 15th, 2023. A celebration of life will be held at noon on Thursday, November 16, 2023, at Sunnyside Christian Reformed Church. A luncheon will be served immediately following.
