Lloyd Alfred Sorlie, 93, formerly of Bottineau, ND, passed on Monday, May 11, 2015 at Landmark Care Center, Yakima, WA. Lloyd was the sixth of seven boys born to Carl Albert and Thilda Ronholdt Sorlie on April 30, 1922 at his family farm in the Harmonious Township of Larson, Burke County, ND. Lloyd was baptized on June 4, 1922 and confirmed on August 11, 1935 at South St. Olaf’s Lutheran Church, Larson, ND. After his father’s death in 1935, Lloyd, at the age of 16, took care of the farm for many years along with his mother and his brother Chet. Lloyd spoke often of his family and had fond memories of his childhood. Five brothers served their country in the armed forces. His mother was among the few 4-star mothers of our country and state. Lloyd proudly flew Marvin’s burial flag each Memorial and Veterans Day.
Lloyd married Viola Kroeplin Wilhelm on January 12, 1969 at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, Bottineau, ND. In 1970, Lloyd became a member of Our Savior’s and was Elder for many years. He served God and fellow man all his life. Lloyd and Viola purchased their farm west of town in 1977 and lived the majority of their lives in Bottineau. He worked for Baukol-Noonan Lignite, Inc., helping to build and later operate the first dragline at the coal mines in Center, ND. He was a wood worker/carpenter all his life. He was a member of the Sons of Norway for 40 years. As a farmer, Lloyd grew grain and maintained horses, cattle, and property for several years. He and Viola spent many winters in Donna, Texas living near Viola’s sister, Floris (Vernon) Grover, and family. In 1998, they travelled to Yakima, WA for the winter; but, Lloyd still enjoyed those North Dakota winters better! Visiting the Ronholdt and Sorlie Farms and St. Olaf ‘s Church were special memories that Lloyd talked about often to his family. Due to health reasons, Lloyd and Viola moved permanently to Yakima in October 2010 to be closer to their son and family. They had celebrated 44 years of marriage when Viola passed on November 12, 2013 . Lloyd kept in touch with family and long-time friends. He was an enthusiastic reader and continued to receive his favorite newspapers from North Dakota. At Ponderosa Assisted Living, he helped with mealtime prayers; participated in Bible study; and stayed active woodworking.
Lloyd is survived by one son, Larry (Shirleen) Wilhelm, Yakima, WA; two daughters, Carolyn (Tom) Boguslawski, Lewiston, ID and Beverly (Kenneth) Kimmel, Lake Benton, MN; Grandchildren Keith (Janet) Kimmel, Darren (Dena) Wilhelm, Kurtis (Amy) Kimmel, Lisa (Lee) Mischke, Sandy Kimmel, Kathy (Bryan) Kester, Paul (Naleah) Boguslawski, Trisha (Steve) Hasselstrom, Rachelle Ormiston, Julie (Jeff) Donohoe, Nathan (Sandra) Boguslawski, David Boguslawski, and Jenifer Boguslawski; 21 Great Grandchildren; sisters-in law Luella Common of Grafton, ND and Donna Sorlie of Conrad, MT; brother-in-law Eddie (Wanita) Kroeplin of Mayville, ND; nephews, nieces, and a host of relatives and friends.
