Leo Bliss

Carl Leo Bliss, 93, passed away on August 24, 2017 in his apartment at Riverview Manor in Selah, WA. He had lived there since April of 2014. He was born on August 23, 1924 at the Ballard Ranch in Buena, WA to Rollah Bliss and Lueseal (Owens) Bliss. Leo was the oldest of four brothers and they all grew up in Buena. He joined the US Army in February of 1943 and received his high school diploma while in Basic Training in Fort Sill, OK. He mainly served in the Philippines and loved talking about his time in the Army and how he would see friends and relatives from home while away from his home. He came home on the USS General Mitchell in 1945 to be home in time for Christmas. He married Betty Lee York on August 2, 1947. They had 4 children, 8 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren with 6 more step great grandchildren. Leo worked at various agriculture farms in Yakima County, the U & I Sugar Company in Toppenish, Hanford for General Electric, a Plywood mill in Stevenson, then in 1951 he started working for the US Army Corps of Engineers at Bonneville Dam. Leo and Betty started being part of the Nazarene Church in their late 20’s. Leo was a fervent worker for the Church and Jesus. He always read the yearly missionary books and enjoyed the devotional books written by his former Pastor, David Ness. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. He went to most of the Stevenson High School games and was awarded a lifetime pass. Leo loved being outside, working in garden, landscaping, camping with his family and enjoying nature. Leo was preceded in death by his brothers Gilbert and Earl, his wife Betty, son-in-law Ken Gove and his granddaughter, Clairissa. He is survived by children Aleta (Tim) Erickson, Rita (Carl) Saari, Rawleigh (Lynn) Bliss, Sheila (Gene) Cates, brother Ray Bliss, 7 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. Graveside Service will be held at West Hills Memorial Park at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, September 1, 2017. A Memorial Service will be held at New Hope Community Church, 29 Channel Drive in Yakima at 2:00 p.m..
