Obituary for Julian D. Pinkham Sr.

Julian D. Pinkham Sr., Holtux and AuchBiAdaAuchJulianBauch (Crow), a revered elder of the Yakama Nation and a lifelong advocate for tribal justice, education, and cultural preservation, passed away surrounded by family and community. A proud member of the Whistling Water Clan, Julian’s life was a testament to service, tradition, and leadership.

A Sundance Chief and respected leader in the Medicine Dance, Julian carried forward sacred traditions with humility and strength. He attended the longhouse at Satus and participated in the feather dance, embodying the spiritual and cultural values of his people. His presence in ceremony was both grounding and inspiring.

Julian was also known for his passion for horse racing, owning and breeding Quarter Horses that competed across the region. His horse Miss Lucy Lu, foaled in 2023, was among his proudest achievements.

His academic journey began at Yakima Valley Community College and continued at Central Washington University, where he earned a Master of Science in December 1982. He later received a Master of Social Work from the University of Washington on June 12, 1992. In 1995–96, Julian was a fellow at the University of Michigan Law School’s Child Advocacy Law Clinic, where he authored a groundbreaking proposal for a uniform tribal children’s code. His work laid the foundation for improved practices in tribal child welfare courts nationwide.

Julian’s long-standing career with the Yakama Nation spanned decades and roles, reflecting his wide-reaching commitment to education, law, and culture:

  • Forestry: September 25, 1967
  • Camp Chaparral Language Arts Teacher: August 17, 1973
  • Center Director, Wapato Long House: August 9, 1974
  • Camp Chaparral Director: June 16, 1976
  • Summer Supportive Education Teacher Assistant: June 10, 1980

His judicial service was extensive and distinguished:

  • Alternate Judge: February 7, 1986
  • Associate Judge: August 29, 1988 – August 7, 1992
  • Children’s Court Judge: July 6, 1993 – November 11, 1999
  • Children’s Court Judge (second term): February 28, 2006 – September 30, 2010

Julian was preceded in death by Delphine Terbasket, Faith Hoptowit, Kanine McKay, and Tyler Pinkham. He leaves behind his beloved children David McKay and Julian Pinkham (Amaryllis), who carry forward his legacy of wisdom, integrity, and cultural pride.

Dressing services will take place at Wapato Valley Hills Funeral Home, followed by formal services at the Toppenish Community Center. Burial will be held at sunrise on Tuesday, July 22, 2025 at Satus Point Cemetery. In honor of Julian’s life, the family invites all who knew him to share stories, songs, and prayers that reflect the spirit he carried so generously.
