John Olivas

October 18, 1956 — August 9, 2015

John Christopher Olivas, born October 18, 1956, was called Home by the Lord and welcomed with open arms on August 9, 2015 after a brief illness. John was raised in Toppenish and was a graduate of Toppenish High School, Class of 1975. His love of sports began when he was young, with football, basketball and baseball. In high school baseball he earned MVP in the Feeder Game, and went on to play in the All State game. John attended Eastern Washington University, where he earned a degree in Sociology and continued to play baseball, known well by his teammates as "Chico". John had a long, successful career with the State of Washington, serving in many leadership roles and in many different capacities. He lead, mentored and coached many employees statewide, developing strong and loving relationships along the way. John's passions were watching sports, listening to music of all genres, attending concerts, and playing the drums, as he was an avid percussionist. He leaves behind his son John Clinton Olivas, whom he loved and admired, and of whom he was so proud. He also leaves behind his father Juan C. Olivas, sisters Lydia Alvarado (Manuel), Sylvia Forgey (Ron) and Santa Olivas, brothers Joe Olivas (Janell) and David Olivas, and numerous others including Michelle Chunn (Lance and Vanessa) and many loving nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his beloved mother Maria Estella Rebollosa, sister Virginia Ann Olivas and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. At the end, knowing that he would be reunited with his loved ones is what gave him strength. At John's request, there will be a private service at a later date. Valley Hills Funeral Home in Zillah is in care of the arrangements. To order memorial trees or send flowers to the family in memory of John Olivas, please visit our flower store.
