Janet Schafer

January 23, 1947 — March 6, 2018

Janet Louise Schafer was delivered to C. Willard Gray and Alda (Goodrow) Gray by her grandfather, Dr. Clyde E. Gray, at St. Joseph Hospital in Tacoma on January 23rd, 1947. She lived in Orting the first four years of her life before moving to Centralia for a year, after which the family then moved to Zillah where she attended school all 12 twelve years, graduating in 1965. While in high school she was in Lassies and Thespians and on the Drill Team. She also belonged to Rainbow Girls where she made a lot of friends from Toppenish. It was during her senior year she met the love of her life, Dick Schafer, of Wapato. While attending Y.V.C. the following year, they became engaged and were married on October 8th, 1966. She worked many years for the Wapato School District, but due to health reasons had to retire early which she so hated to do as she really loved working with children. Janet loved shopping (especially QVC), cooking (no one made potato salad like she did!) and just browsing through cook books. She loved the holidays and always decorated her home for them. She hosted the family dinners every Thanksgiving and Christmas. Her greatest pleasure was spending time with family, especially her grandchildren. Janet passed away on Tuesday, March 6th, 2018, due to complications from Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis. She is survived by her loving husband, Dick; her son, Scott Schafer and wife, Melissa, their daughter, Keayanna; her daughter, Carrie Romero and husband, Michael, their children Zechariah, Skylar and Ariah all of Wapato; two sisters: Beverly Newman and husband, Gary of Zillah; Carolyn Gray and husband Dan Ruff, of Yakima; and a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Ron and Barbara McClinton of Olympia. She is also survived by several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews who loved her and will miss her very much. She is preceded in death by her parents; her father-in-law and mother-in-law; her niece, Angel Jae Luisi; and a grandson, Aaron Michael Romero. The Lord blessed us with Janet for a short time but gave us a lifetime of memories. We will all love and miss her, until we see each other again in our heavenly kingdom To order memorial trees or send flowers to the family in memory of Janet Schafer, please visit our flower store.
