Janet Kay Lawrence was born to Melvin and Jeannette Lawrence on
January 20, 1943 in Toppenish Washington. She started her schooling in
Toppenish but soon transferred to White Swan where her parents
relocated to start their own farm and ranch.
She met the love of her life James Lee McCormick when he was
stationed at the Yakima Firing Center. They were married on May 2,
1964 in James Lee’s hometown church in Rocky Fork, West Virginia.
Together they had two children Melvin James McCormick born in 1966
and Lisa Anne McCormick Matthews born 1969. They made their life
here in the Yakima Valley.
Janet Kay made her profession as a stay at home mom and also a dance
instructor for over 30 years. She was an active member of the Yakama
Nation, her community. Participating in church, school and community
events. She may be best remembered for her beautiful cakes and
delicious cookies.
Although she was stricken with Alzheimer’s in her later years, she
always had a twinkle in her eyes when her two greatest joys would
come to visit her. Grandson Hunter Lee and Granddaughter Cassie Kay.
She was a strong believer and knew Jesus Christ as her savior. She was
preceded in death by her parents Melvin and Jeannette Lawrence,
brother Melvin James Lawrence JR., Husband James Lee McCormick,
and her son Melvin James McCormick
She is survived by her daughter Lisa (Randy) Matthews of Yakima,

Yvonne Shuel and numerous cousins and loved one. My dad’s siblings,
that always made her feel like a true sister. Cassie, Clyde, Clay, and
