James Leroy
Haney
Mar 17, 1949 — Oct 19, 2026
James L. Haney, 77, died at Fieldstone Memory Care of Yakima on October 19, 2026.
Jim was born on March 17, 1949, in Seattle, Washington. At age two, he was adopted by Stan and Goldie Haney of Yakima.
He attended Yakima schools and was a natural athlete, excelling in every sport he participated in, but he particularly treasured his memories of playing football for the Eisenhower Cadets. During his senior year, he set a state record for throwing the javelin.
After graduating from Eisenhower High School in 1967, he attended Central Washington College, where he studied economics and psychology, graduating in 1971.
Jim married Sarah Lenderman in 1968, and they had one son, Sean James Haney. Jim owned and operated J.L. Haney Realty & Appraisal from 1974 until retiring in 2008.
In 1985, Jim married Sue Oynes, and their life together was filled with adventures of camping, hiking, and backpacking-always with a dog in tow. When they took their hiking boots off, they enjoyed international travel, with their first trip to Norway being the most special because there Jim found his roots.
Jim was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease in 2017. With Sue's support, he continued to live life to the fullest, making two more trips to Norway and traveling throughout Washington State until he could no longer travel. He also enjoyed volunteering at Sons of Norway events.
Jim was preceded in death by his adoptive parents, Stan and Goldie Haney, and his sister, Sue Hampton.
He is survived by his loving wife of 41 years, Sue; his son, Sean Haney; his granddaughters, Morgan Haney and Ashley Haney (Dustin); his niece, Suzanne Forester; and his nephews, Kelby Wyatt and Lyle Hampton.
Sue extends her heartfelt thanks to the MultiCare Hospice team for its support and to the caring staff at Fieldstone. She is grateful to everyone who loved Jim and helped him bring a full life to a close with dignity.
At Jim's request, there will be no service. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the Alzheimer's Association
