Irma Alvarez

On Sunday, October 6, 2019, Irma Kathleen Alvarez, passed away at the age of 68 after battling cancer for almost 2 years. She passed away with her children by her bedside in her own home. Irma was born on December 30, 1950 in Denver, Colorado. This was just one of many places that she lived because her father served in the military. Eventually, she and her family planted roots in Yakima, Washington and have lived here for over 50 years. She graduated from A.C. Davis in 1969. She went on to get a teaching degree from Eastern Washington University. Shortly after college she met her husband and got married. She did substitute teaching and held a variety of jobs until she got her job at Hanford, and was there for 19 years. She has 3 children Silvia (Jason), Dan (Megan), and Nancy (Erich) all 7 years apart. She would lovingly joke that it took her 7 years to forget the pain of child birth. She later returned to school and got her LPN license, but chose to take care of her aging mother instead of pursuing a job in the medical field. She also took on the family rental business and worked part time as a demonstrator at Costco. Irma had a kind and gentle spirit and was a kid at heart. She was an artist who enjoyed singing, drawing and painting. Irma played a big role in her Church, the Community of Christ, as a priest. Her strong faith led her to donate time to the OIC food bank, sing in the church choir, and serve in youth ministry. Grandkids were a big part of her life. She loved reading and encouraged her love of reading to her children and grandchildren. She was known for her green thumb, her famous guacamole and her love of sweets. Irma was preceded in death by her father, Bill Scott. She is survived by her mother, Mary Scott, her three children, Silvia, Dan and Nancy and her grandchildren Kaleia, Claire, Riley and Leighton and her sisters Debbie, Barbara, nieces and nephews.
