Hubert Griffin

April 14, 1926 — April 1, 2016

Hubert Griffin of Zillah, WA died Friday in Yakima’s Memorial Hospital. Hubert was born 4/14/26 in Moultrie, GA to John Wesley and Arlow (Hinson) Griffin. Forced to quit high school during World War II to help with the family farm, Hubert later completed his high school education and became a mechanic. He came out west in 1947 eventually settling in Walla Walla, WA where he worked in auto dealerships and was a certified Packard mechanic. Hubert married Emily Jean Curcio at St. Francis Church in Walla Walla 8/10/1952. From 1948-1952 he was a member of the Washington State National Guard. He was then hired full time by National Guard as a vehicle mechanic in a career that spanned from 1956-1986. In 1963 the family moved to Yakima when Guard transferred him. He and Emily later moved to Selah and then to Zillah to be closer to the grandchildren. When Hubert retired in 1986 he had served a total of 36 years with the Guard. From Georgia he carried his honesty, reliability and strong work ethic. He also kept his interest in the outdoors with many camping, hunting and fishing trips, but in later years he concentrated on fishing. Hubert was always looking to help other people. He was very self-reliant and never forget what it was like to grow up in Georgia during the great depression. He was a talented handy-man, often sought out by family, friends, and neighbors to help repair just about anything. He always had time for helping others. He made friends easy and in retirement spent many hours with the coffee crews in Selah and Zillah. He was a member of Resurrection Catholic Church in Zillah.
