Gordon Jones went home to be with his Lord on Thursday, December 22, 2022 at his home in Grandview. He was born September 29, 1927, the youngest of five children to Ira and Maude Jones. He attended elementary school at Waneta Schoolhouse and graduated from Sunnyside High school in 1945. Gordon spent most of his after school hours helping with chores on the family farm.
Gordon was active in 4-H and FFA where he won many awards for showing sheep, swine and dairy. He loved to share many fond memories of showing in a variety of fair locations including Spokane, Portland, Yakima, Central Washington, Puyallup and Benton County. The train would stop behind their home where they would load their animals and ride to the various fairs.
On January 18, 1947 Gordon married his high school sweetheart Laura Lang. They carried on the Jones family farm on Waneta Road becoming the center of their growing family. Their six children were pivotal in keeping the family farm in working order. Together they operated a dairy and raised a variety of crops. Breeding and selling sheep and hogs for 4-H kids for many years, later switching to selling butcher hogs. After 60 years of marriage, Laura passed away in 2007. Gordon remained on the farm until his passing, the only home he ever lived in for all of his 95 years.
Gordon will forever be remembered for his faithfulness and involvement as a member of the First Christian Church and later the Sunnyside Grace Brethren Church. In his later life, his many grandchildren and great grandchildren loved to spend time with him on the farm. He equally enjoyed attending their 4-H, FFA and sporting events accounting for numerous hours on the bleachers. Gordon never missed a family gathering and was always happy to see friendly faces stop by the house for a visit. There was always something for kids to do on grandpa’s farm.
Gordon is preceded in death by his wife Laura and daughter Laureen, son-in-law Greg Howell, parents, one sister and three brothers. He is survived by his children Danny (Nancy) Jones of Yakima, Marlene (Gary) Hughes of Prosser, Irene (Steve) Larson of Yakima, Colleen Howell of Goldendale, Rodney (Rebekah) Jones of Grandview and his numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Gordon’s viewing will be held at Valley Hills Funeral Home on Friday, January 6th from 4pm-6pm. Graveside Service will be at the Prosser Cemetery Saturday, January 7th at 10am.
