George Oliver

George Weston Oliver, 95, joined his wife Linda in heaven on December 7, 2013 at Memorial Hospital in Yakima. He was born July 5, 1918 at Clovercrest, the family farm near Amboy, Minnesota. He was the second of six children born to Earl DeWitt Oliver and Julia Ethel (Weston) Oliver. George spent his childhood on the farm and attended the one-room schoolhouse down the road where his father and uncles had received their early education. He graduated from nearby Truman High School and then attended Iowa State College in Ames, Iowa, before graduating from Northwestern Bible Institute in Minneapolis, Minnesota in 1942. George married his college sweetheart, Linda Fast, on October 15, 1943 and they settled down at Clovercrest where George worked the farm and they grew their family of four children. In 1958, they sold the farm and moved to Albert Lea, Minnesota where George became the pastor of Faith Baptist Church. Other moves included Denver, CO, pastorates in Fremont, NE, Walden, CO and Cañon City, CO before they moved to Yakima, WA in 1985. George attended Memorial Bible Church in Yakima where he was active in the SAMers group for senior citizens. George was known for his firm handshake, his friendly greetings to everyone and his joyful spirit. He enjoyed tinkering and reading. George is survived by his four children: James (Marsha) of Towanda, IL, Kathy (David) Pietsch of Yakima, Steven of Lakewood, CO and Thomas (Jerri) of Buena Vista, CO. He is also survived by 12 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, five siblings and his wife, Linda, in August 2011.
