Garland Hill

May 23, 1931 — March 26, 2018

Garland C. Hill went home to be with the Lord on March 26, 2018. He was born on May 23, 1931 to Garland and Guyula (Prater) Hill. The oldest of nine children, he worked alongside his dad giving him his paycheck to help support the family until his marriage. Upon the passing of his parents, Garland became the patriarch of his family. Garland was placed in a managerial position over various forest production plants and saw mills. He exhibited respect and deep concern and affection for all. His philosophy on being a manager was “you manage with appreciation not intimidation”. This philosophy earned him the love and respect of all who knew him. Garland was a man of very few words but, when he spoke it was profound and you felt comforted and uplifted. He loved traveling with his wife Sue in their motor home. For 23 years they enjoyed going south for the winter. Fishing for salmon and steelhead on the Columbia River brought him much joy, as did rooting for the Seattle Mariners. He was a “wanna be coach” for the team he loved and followed them to his death. Garland loved his grandchildren immensely. He was proud of them and their accomplishments, encouraging them and supporting them in all their interests. Garland is preceded in death by his parents, his first wife Juanita, sons Stephen and Michael, brother Virgil and sister Artence. He is survived by his wife Sue, sons Dwayne (Lou) and Dan (Pam), 10 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, brothers, Leon, Ray, Delbert, L.T. and Phillip, and sister Bobbie Jo. God has gained a wonderful, kind, good man who firmly followed His commandment of “love thy neighbor as thyself”. A Viewing will be held on Monday, April 2, 2018 from 9:00-11:00 a.m. at Valley Hills Funeral Home (2600 Business Ln., Yakima). A Funeral Service will follow at Grace Lutheran Church (1207 S. 7th Ave., Yakima) at 1:00 p.m. with a burial at Terrace Heights Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to the American Heart Association or Grace Lutheran School.
