Ernest “Ernie” Toop, 80, of Zillah, Washington, went home to be with the Lord on December 6, 2025, following a short battle with cancer. Born on October 18, 1945, in Yakima, Washington, to Gloria and Helmuth Toop, Ernie lived a life defined by service, loyalty, and steadfast dedication to his family and community.

Ernie proudly served his country as a weather forecaster in the United States Air Force for 20 years, retiring with the rank of Master Sergeant. Following his military career, he continued his commitment to public service with the United States Postal Service, where he worked another 20 years before retiring. His reliability and consistency were hallmarks of his character, and he was admired for his stoicism and devotion to duty.

A familiar face in Zillah, Ernie was deeply connected to his community. He was known to attend local sports events, especially the local high school’s football and basketball games, and his love for Zillah was evident—his license plate still reads “Zillah.” He was always prepared, carrying a notebook and pen in his shirt pocket wherever he went, and he lived his life with a schedule as precise as his character. In quieter moments, he enjoyed music, sports, and old western movies.

Ernie was preceded in death by his son, Leon, and his ex-wife of 30 years, Marlyce. He is survived by his son, Kevin; his grandchildren, Jordan, Justina, Chelsie, and Kaylee; six great-grandchildren; and his brothers, Leonard and Gary. His legacy of loyalty and service will continue to live on through them and through the many lives he touched in Zillah.

A funeral service will be held on December 22, 2025, at 2:00 p.m. at the Zillah Cemetery.

Ernie’s life was one of quiet strength, unwavering commitment, and deep love for God, his country, his family, and his friends. He will be remembered not only for his service to his country and his town, but also for the steady presence he provided to all who knew him.
