Emma Elstad

December 14, 1924 — March 22, 2018

Emma “Jeane” Elstad went to her forever home on March 22, 2018. Her wish was to pass this life peacefully at home with loved ones near and she did just that. Jeane was born in Berryville, Arkansas to Carl Benjamin Standlee and Eather Elva “Edie” (Hanby) Standlee. During the height of the Great Depression, Jeane, her parents and younger brother, Don, moved from place to place, living in a tent, while Carl worked on building roads. She enjoyed telling the story when attending Berryville High School, she earned the title of Homecoming Queen by selling the most tickets of anyone in her class. At school, Jeane forged a lifelong friendship with Georgia (Stubbs) Williams, the sister she never had. When she was 17 she migrated with her family west when her father continued to build roads across America and eventually settled in Grandview, WA to join several family members all along the County Line Road to farm. Jeane met the love of her life, Stanley Lavern Elstad in Marble Mount, WA. Because of her beauty and southern charm, Stan quickly broke off his engagement with another girl, and married Jeane only 3 weeks later when she was just 18 years old. As a member of the Army Air Force, Stan, soon after was stationed in England during World War II, while a pregnant Jeane waited for his safe return. Jeane gave birth to daughter, Carla, in 1944 while Stan was still overseas, and son, Steev, in 1947. The G.I. Bill enabled Jeane and Stan to purchase 28 acres near the relatives off of County Line Road. Here, Stan built their first family home and Jeane, who has always loved decorating, proudly furnished her home with new Colonial furniture. The tight-knit family was of utmost importance to Jeane. Square dances in the basement, music parties and gospel singing brought joy to Jeane’s heart. She was also a talented cook, best known for her cinnamon rolls, peach cobbler and southern-style chicken and dumplings. Due to Stan’s job as a Darigold milkman, they lived in Grandview, Prosser and eventually settled in Yakima where they lived until Stan’s death in 2008. Jeane moved to Lincoln City, OR for a few years before returning to Prosser where she lived with Carla and son-in-law, Tim. Jeane and Stan both loved the Lord and lived their faith every day. Jeane knew when she died, she would be in the presence of her savior, Jesus Christ. She is now reunited in heaven with her husband, Stan, and her son, Steev. Jeane is survived by her daughter, Carla (Tim ) Schorle, Prosser; her daughter-in-law, Karen Elstad, Pendleton; grandchildren Shawn (Cecilia) Malmgren, Yakima; Rachelle (Jason) Wiley, Prosser; Tonja (Jeff) Tosh, Torrington, WY; Bill (Donna) Elstad, Pendleton; Bryce Elstad, Coeur d’Alene; Melissa (Chris) Monkman, Pendleton and great-grandchildren Sarah, Jessica, Christopher, Anthony, Johnny, Brady, Ashley, Desiree, Tyler, Landry, Trent, Jack and Ellie and great-great grandchildren Khloe, Kayleigh and Lily.
