Elwood Garns peacefully passed away on August 6, 2015. He was born on August 17, 1924 to Philip and Florence (McNally) Garns. He was raised in Monroe, Michigan. He graduated from Monroe High School in 1942. From 1943-1945 he served in the 37th Division of the US Army. Following his military service, he worked for the United States Postal Service for 30 years. Retiring in 1984, he married Delia Gabbard and they moved to Yakima, WA. He was a lifetime member of VFW Post 379, and he loved his buddy Murphy.
He is survived by his wife Delia, of Yakima, his brother Lorne Stevens of Monroe, MI, his daughters, Maria Polishak, Nancy Heinzerling, and Alice Roop, all of Michigan, and his son, Jim Gabbard, of Yakima. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Jason, Chrissy, Mathew, Eric, Sarah, and Josh Heinzerling, Jackie, Cindy, Andy, and Bryan Polishak, Zachary, Jonathan, and Bradley Roop, as well as great grandchildren, Carson, and Brandon Knagg, all of Monroe, Michigan, Kali and Lukas Gabbard, of Yakima, WA. He is preceded in death by his parents, his sisters, Dorothy McIntyre, Betty Zitzman, Florence Frazier, his brother, Robert Garns, his granddaughter, Angie, his grandson, Adam Heinzerling, and his son, William “Bill” Garns.
