SCOTTSDALE, AZ - Elsie S. Kerr, 89, passed away on October 7, 2013. She was a long-time valley resident who relocated to Arizona in 2012. Elsie was a loving presence to her children, six grandchildren and two great-granddaughters. She is survived by her son Christopher and daughter Leslie. Her husband John and daughter Kimberly preceded her in death. During WWII Elsie served onboard the Aleda E. Lutz hospital ship as an Army nurse and first lieutenant. Following the service, she studied music at the University of Colorado where she met her husband. They moved to Yakima in 1955 where Elsie worked several years at Memorial Hospital and as a school nurse in the Yakima and Toppenish districts for over 25 years. She received her Bachelor of Science degree from Central Washington State. Elsie loved singing and traveling; faith and church provided lifelong guidance. In 2012 through the “Wish of a Lifetime” foundation, she visited the Library of Congress to see and share her documented service memories on file with the Veterans History Project. Her positive influence touched many lives and she will be greatly missed. Interment at Terrace Heights Memorial Park will be held at 10 AM on Saturday, October 26 followed by an 11:30 memorial service at First Presbyterian Church. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Yakima VFW.
