Elaine D. Haines, 93, passed away quietly on Saturday, June 2, 2018. She was born on October 28, 1924, in Los Angeles, CA. to Archie and Lorene McGrath. She was one of 14 children, whose father was a farmer and mother a homemaker. Elaine attended schools in Yakima after her parents moved the family here from California. As a young woman in the 1940’s she went to work for Mercy Theatres, where she met her future husband, Gordon, “Gordy” Haines. They were married for 65 years and had two daughters. Elaine was a caring and gentle person who loved being a homemaker, and raising her two daughters, then later in life, spending time with her grandchildren. She was renowned for her cooking skills, her canning, and baking abilities. She also loved to sew, crochet, and do fine embroidery work. As such, for many years she was involved with her church sewing group, the Presbyterian Sewing Circle. She was preceded in death by her parents, four sister, three brothers, and her loving husband, Gordy. She is survived by her daughters, Terry Schlect (Steve) and Patti Gridley (Carl Huerd); grandson, Stephen Gridley; granddaughter, Lori Mikes; four sisters: Vivian Dufault, Dorothy Drake, Jeanette Nielsen (Ted), and Rosie Karnes; two brothers David McGrath and Jim McGrath, and numerous nieces and nephews. Terri and Patti would like to express their deepest gratitude to the caregivers at Ellen House for the love and care they gave Elaine. Jenna, Cindy, Lynette, Jacque, and Maria your thoughtfulness and kindness will never be forgotten. A special thanks to Dr. Lascar for the kindness he showed mom while under his care and to Hospice for the care they provided in her final days. At Elaine’s request there will be no funeral service. There will be a private graveside service for family members at West Hills Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Ellen House, 616 S. 30th Ave., Yakima, WA 98902, Attn.
