Dorothy West, 96, of Sunnyside passed away Tuesday, April 21, 2015 in Sunnyside. She was born July 28, 1918 in Clinton, Oklahoma. Dorothy married Harold West in Solo, Missouri on December 24, 1937. After seeing a Red Delicious apple they moved from Missouri to Washington State in 1942 where they began sharecrop farming. After years of sharecropping they bought and paid off their home place in Sunnyside on Highway 241. Mother was educated in Cabool in Mt. Grove Missouri where she graduated from High School and received a teaching certificate. Dorothy and Harold worked hard in the fields and milking their cows, with the sharecropping to help pay for the place on Hanford Highway in Sunnyside. Dorothy was a 4-H Leader for many years and a Grange member in Sunnyside since 1943 which was their entertainment and social life. Mother was a leader and helpful with the big dinners that the grange put on. Dorothy and Harold went to Alaska several years to their daughter Charlotte Emerson and family, which they enjoyed very much. In 1960 they planted concord grapes that they were very proud of. Dorothy is preceded in death by her parents Frank and Maye Tottingham, Husband Harold West, 3 brothers Earl, Leslie, and James Tottingham, son-in-law; Chuck, and a grandson; Eugene. She is survived by two daughters; Blanche (Hank) Tobin of Mabton Washington, Charlotte (Chuck) Emerson of Anchorage Alaska, Grandchildren; Glen Emerson, Colleen (Donny) Thompson, Craig Emerson, Michael (Kathy), Joe (Ronni), Brian Tobin and 5 great grandchildren and on great great-grandchild. Viewing and visitation will be held 4:00 to 6:00 pm Friday April 24, 2015 at Valley Hills Funeral Home in Sunnyside. Graveside services will be held 2:00 pm Saturday, April 25 2015 at Lower Valley Memorial Gardens in Sunnyside. Valley Hills Funeral Home in Sunnyside is in care of all arrangements.
