Dorothy and Jake became sweethearts when they met at Zillah High School. She graduated from A.C. Davis High School with the class of '46, after moving to Yakima with her parents. Shortly after graduation, Dorothy and Jake married on February 27, 1947 in the Orchardvale Grange, outside of Zillah. They started their family in Granger, moving to Zillah, after Jake took a job at Seattle First National Bank in Toppenish. The couple eventually moved to Toppenish in October of 1966 and called it home for 48 years. They celebrated 62 years of marriage before Jake’s passing. In 2014, Dorothy moved to Rexford Manor Retirement Community in Yakima where she met many active residents and made several friends, including her neighbor, Glenda Mason. Dorothy or Dot, as her brothers lovingly called her, was a mother and housewife who enjoyed having guests to her home. She especially loved having her children’s friends to her home. No one ever left her home without a full stomach, as she loved to cook and bake tasty treats. Dorothy attended Zillah Christian Reformed Church (Now Zillah Faith Community Church) for over 60 years. She sang in the church’s choir, was a Ladies Aide Society member. Dorothy loved to serve in the church’s nursery. She cherished many friends and relatives who attended the church. She had a strong faith with Our Lord Jesus Christ and loved singing the old hymns. As the children grew older and started families of their own, Dorothy and Jake loved to visit them. She loved traveling with Jake, to the Midwest, to visit Gloria’s family, as well as her visiting sons here in Washington. The couple celebrated their 60th Anniversary celebration on the Island of Oahu, Hawaii, where family joined them. They often said it was their favorite trip because it was with their family. Dorothy loved to cheer for her children and grandchildren at sporting events as well as attend musical performances in which they participated. There was nothing like hearing Mom/Grandma yell "Whoo-Hooo!" from the bleachers when one of them made a score. She truly loved and enjoyed her family. She will be greatly missed. The family would like to thank Heartlinks Hospice and Palliative Care. With their help, Dorothy was able live out her life at home, as she wanted, after suffering stroke a week before passing. The family requests that donations be made, in the name of Dorothy Oord, to Heartlinks Hospice of Sunnyside, WA or to Sunnyside Christian School, Sunnyside, WA. Visitation will be held from 4-7pm on Friday, February 10, 2017 at Valley Hills Funeral Home in Zillah.
