Dorothy Louise Dunn, 92, of Wapato passed away peacefully, Thursday, February 23rd, 2017 in Yakima, Washington. Her amazing life started July 25th, 1924 when she was born in Lee's Summit, Missouri to Leo and Ruby McCune. At the age of 13, the family moved to Grand Coulee, WA where her father became a dam worker. Dorothy and her sister Cleo attended school in Nespelem and Wenatchee. In 1941, she met and married the love of her life, Clyde A Dunn, whom she had met at a roller rink. They welcomed two children to their family, Allen C. Dunn and Virginia L. Carter.
Her long life was full of love, laughter, work and adventure. While raising their kids, she worked alongside her husband, supporting their family businesses. It was the purchase of the Liberty Theater in 1955 that brought them to Wapato. For twenty-two years, she enjoyed meeting the people that came from all around the valley to see their movies. She made people from every generation feel welcome, accepted and at home.
Dorothy and Clyde's retirement as "snowbirds" began in 1975. They spent the next twenty-three years traveling the country, fishing, visiting friends and enjoying their hobbies. "Dot" became a master at whatever she put her mind to, whether it was gardening, sewing, quilting, canning, cooking, fishing or crabbing. She was loved by all and will always be remembered for her hard work, beautiful quilts, love for family and friends, quick wit, devilish sense of humor, and her ability to garden in white pants without getting dirty.
She was a proud member of Eastern Star for over fifty years, serving as Worthy Matron, Grand Representative to Ontario, Canada, and Grand Elect for the state of Washington. She was also a member of EL Shelan Temple No. 178, Daughters of the Nile, and the M.M. Traveler camping group, which she enjoyed very much.
Dorothy is survived by her children: Allen (Kathy) Dunn of Seattle, Virginia Carter of Wapato; four grandchildren: Patrick Dunn and Tracie Hurtz, Lisa and Donell Carter; six great-grandchildren: Kellee Dunn, Kory, Scott and Brad Hurtz, and Charlie and Jacob Fiander. She is preceded in death by her parents, Ruby and Leo McCune of Cashmere; sister, Cleo Reiman of Seattle; and husband, Clyde Dunn of Wapato and many nieces and nephews.
The family is grateful to the staff at Good Samaritan of Yakima for going above and beyond their duties, caring for and loving Dorothy as one of their own.
Funeral services will be held at the Valley Hills Funeral Home in Yakima on Friday, March 3, 2017 at 11:00 am with burial to follow at Tahoma Cemetery. Dorothy's wish was that donations be made to Shriners Hospital mailed c/o Valley Hills Funeral Home (2600 Business Ln., Yakima WA 98901).
