Dr. David W. Johnson—known lovingly as Papa Dave, Dr. J, and Encyclopedia Dave—passed away peacefully on September 15, 2025, in Yakima, Washington, at the age of 75.

David was born on March 8, 1950, in Walla Walla, Washington, to Wilmer and Faye Johnson. He grew up with his brother, Dan, and carried a love of family, faith, and learning throughout his life.

After graduating from Walla Walla Adventist University, David earned his medical degree from Kansas City College of Osteopathic Medicine and completed his family practice residency in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1983. He went on to dedicate his life to medicine, serving patients with compassion and skill. Most of his career was spent in the Emergency Department, where his warm smile and gentle presence comforted countless patients. He was honored as Doctor of the Year at Sunnyside Hospital, and his colleagues deeply valued his expertise, humility, and humor.

In 2010, David joined the faculty of Pacific Northwest University of Health Sciences, where he inspired and mentored the next generation of physicians. His students admired him not only for his knowledge but also for his kindness and generosity of spirit. Beyond his professional work, David gave back to his community by volunteering at Wellness House and the Union Gospel Mission in Yakima.

David was preceded in death by his parents, Wilmer and Faye Johnson; his brother, Dan; and his beloved wife, Patti, whom he cherished throughout their marriage. He is survived by his children, Erin , Kristofer, Shelby and Brian ; and his grandchildren, Avery, Jack, Riley, Quinn, Harper, Taylor, and Carter.

Those who knew David remember him as smart, loving, warm, hardworking, selfless, funny, thoughtful, and generous. His family and friends will miss him deeply, but his legacy endures through the lives he touched, the students he mentored, and the many patients he served.

A celebration of life will be determined and announced. Messages or cards/flowers can be sent to David.w.johnson50@outlook.com
