Daniel Ivy

April 30, 1944 — November 22, 2014

Daniel R. Ivy died at home on Saturday, November 22nd, 2014. He was born on April 30th, 1944 in Colorado Springs, Colorado to Samuel Cecil and Pauline Ester. He was the youngest brother to Eldon, Marilyn, Gloria and David. When he was two months old, they moved to St. John, Kansas where they grew up on a farm. They sold the farm when he was sixteen years old and moved to Kent, Washington. He attended and graduated high school from Kent High School in 1962. Afterwards he went on to trade school to train as an automobile mechanic. During this time he met his first wife Donna C. Coon and they had their son Ronald C. Ivy “Chuck” on October 27th, 1964. After a brief marriage that ended in divorce, he met the love of his life, Marie “Chris” Harlan. They had their first date at Ivar’s Seafood Restaurant on the wharf in Seattle, Washington. They celebrated many anniversaries in Seattle where they always did an Argosy Cruise and finished with dinner at Ivar’s Restaurant. After a brief courtship they married on September 30th, 1966. This last September they celebrated their 48th wedding anniversary. Shortly after getting married, they moved to Houston, Texas because Dan received a good job opportunity. They had their first daughter Susan Marie Ivy in April of 1968. Sadly, she passed away a few days later. Then on October 31st, 1969, their second daughter, Dana M. Ivy was born. While trying for another child, they were blessed with twins. Right before the twins were born they made a bold move back to Auburn, Washington where the twins, Toni M. Ivy and Betty A. Ivy (Agosto) were born on November 24th, 1970. About a year later, they made their permanent move to Yakima, Washington. Dan worked as an auto mechanic until he retired in 2010 at age 66. During these years he was not only a master mechanic, but also a motorcycle enthusiast, private pilot, gun buff, car fanatic, and of course, a HUGE John Wayne fan. He also enjoyed the great outdoors and spent many nights with his family camping. If there was something that needed to get done, all you needed to do was ask, and Dan could fix it, build it, or design it. He even built his own experimental airplane and hand crafted a wooden propeller for it. Dan wasn’t afraid to get his hands dirty and there were few things he couldn’t do. Dan was the social butterfly of the neighborhood where he and Chris lived for the last 35 years. He loved the neighbors and loved helping out when needed. Although Dan had many friends, his best buddy was his dog, Chico. Dan is survived by his wife of 48 years, Marie “Chris” (Harlan) Ivy, a son and daughter-in-law, Ronald “Chuck” Ivy and Cynthia Ivy of Hampstead, NC; daughters Dana M. Laton of Yakima, WA, Toni M. Ivy of Yakima, WA, and Betty A. Agosto and son-in-law Alexander Agosto of Dunn, NC; brothers Eldon Ivy and sister-in-law Cheryl of Hartford, CT, David Ivy and sister-in-law Kathy of Enumclaw, WA; sister Marilyn Thornburg of Hudson, KS; grandchildren Heather Ivy-Sutterfield, Charles “Chaz” M. Ivy, Danielle K. Ivy, Jacob M. Ivy-Bailey, Michelle K. Rowane, Emma D. Ivy, Anthony J. Agosto and Alan M. Agosto; great-grandchildren Shanna F. Angle and Colton Sutterfield. He is also survived by numerous extended family members and friends. He is preceded in death by his daughter Susan M. Ivy; his parents Samuel C. Ivy and Pauline E. Ivy; and his sister Gloria Crawford. Dan’s funeral was held in St. John, Kansas on December 5th, 2014. Services were held at the Church of Christ Chapel followed by graveside services at Fairview Park Services in St. John, Kansas. Dan was put to rest next to both his parents per his wishes. A celebration of life will be planned in the near future for his Yakima family and friends. In lieu of flowers, if you wish to donate, please donate to Wags to Riches Animal Rescue, P.O. Box 3177, Union Gap, Washington 98903. The Ivy family would like to express their deepest gratitude to Valley Hills Funeral Home.
