Obituary

Cyrus "Miimaun OkiiTaum ChushAknii" Joseph Dick Squeochs Sr., a beloved member of his community, passed away on December 6, 2025, in Yakima, Washington, at the age of 79. Born on August 6, 1946, in Toppenish, Washington, Cyrus dedicated his life to serving others, particularly his people, and was deeply respected for his contributions both as a community leader and a devoted family man.

Cyrus's journey began at Chilocco Indian Boarding School, from which he graduated in 1965. Following his education, he proudly served in the U.S.MC., commencing after his graduation from boarding school and continuing for numerous years. After years of commitment to service, he returned home in 1980 and furthered his education, earning a bachelor's degree from Central Washington University.

A dedicated professional, Cyrus retired from Yakama Nation Contract Care after many years of service. His devotion to his community was evident in all aspects of his life, from his work to his numerous hobbies. He found great joy in refereeing basketball games and coaching his sons and daughters basketball teams throughout the reservation and enjoy his work leading 7 drum services that allowed him to connect with others and support cultural heritage.

Cyrus is survived by his sons: David, Byron, Cyrus Jr. (Debbie), Douglas, and Jerry (Alvina). His daughters, Leslie (Jeremiah) and Clarissa, cherished their father's wisdom and love. He is also survived by his sister, Trina Sherwood, as well as numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who brought him immense joy in his later years. The family extends a special thank you to granddaughters, Ashley and Dom, for their dedicated care of Cyrus.

Cyrus was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Betty Ann Andrews Dick, and his parents, Maggie Sam and Moses Dick Squeochs Sr. He also mourned the loss of his brothers, Moses Dick Squeochs Jr., Evans Dick, and Roger Dick Sr., as well as his sisters, Thelma Patchpe, Delores Shock, Edith Frank, and Marian Squeochs.

He will be remembered for his loving spirit, his commitment to his people, and the indelible impact he made in the lives of those who knew him. Forever in our hearts, Cyrus leaves behind a legacy of service, kindness, and unwavering love.

Services are scheduled for December 8, 2025, beginning at 10:00 AM at the Valley Hills Funeral Home in Wapato, Washington, followed by a gathering at the Toppenish Creek Longhouse in White Swan that evening at 7:00 PM. A burial service will take place the following morning at Umtuch-Logie Cemetery in Yakima County, starting at 7:00 AM.
