Cynthia Johnson

August 8, 1959 — June 18, 2015

Cynthia June Johnson (nee Holden) passed away at her home in Yakima, Washington on June 18th at 8:50pm, surrounded by her loving family. Cindy was 55 years old and had bravely battled cancer for almost 9 years. Cindy was born on August 8th, 1959 at Joint Base Lewis–McChord Air Force Base in Tacoma, WA. When her father was re-stationed, the family moved to San Antonio, Texas, where she attended grades one and two. In 1967 the family made one final move back to their hometown of Zillah, WA. Cindy completed high school in Zillah and always talked fondly about growing up there. After graduation in 1977, Cindy moved to Yakima and attended Yakima Business College before becoming a secretary for Brown Brother’s. In June of 1983 she met her future husband Leon, and they were married 5 months later. In 1987 she gave birth to her first son Ben, followed 6 years later by the birth of her second son, Sam. Cindy considered her time spent with Leon raising their family the best period of her life. She was an extremely involved and dedicated wife and mother who supported her family unyieldingly and loved them unconditionally. She was proud to see both of her sons get married and share in their numerous successes. She loved the beach and the Mariners, and was able to enjoy them both in the year leading up to her passing. When asked how she’d like to be remembered, she said: “I loved everyone as they were and are.” Cindy was our shining star and brightened our world; there are no words to express our sorrow at her passing. Cindy taught us what it means to be brave; never complaining about her circumstances or giving up. She fought bravely and continued working even while receiving chemo and radiation treatments. The family would like to thank Dr. Albert Brady and his staff at NW Hematology Oncology, as well as the Memorial Hospital staff, for all their love and care and giving us an extra 9 years with Cindy. She was preceded in death by her parents, Vernon E. and Catherine A. Holden and her brother, David Holden. She is survived by her husband, Leon, her two sons, Ben (Lindsay) and Sam (Rebecca), and her siblings Earl, Cathy, Cheri, and Billy. A viewing will be held from 11am to 7pm on Friday, June 26 at Valley Hills Funeral Home in Terrace Heights. A celebration of life will be held at 11am on Saturday, June 27 at The Seasons Performance Hall in Yakima, followed by a burial service at the Zillah Cemetery. Dessert, punch, and coffee will be served at Faith Community Church in Zillah following the burial service. The family asks that you dress comfortably as Cindy would have liked.
