Consuelo “Connie” Becho went home to be with her Heavenly Father on Tuesday, May 7, 2024. After a four-year battle with cancer, which she fought with such courage, strength, and tenacity, she passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by her family, with her husband by her side. She was 81 years old.
Connie was born on November 13, 1942, in Sebastian, Texas. She was the daughter of Antonio and Juanita (Figueroa) Gonzalez. Being the oldest of 18 children, she often cared for her siblings and became a second mom to them. As migrant workers, Connie and her family moved around a lot when she was younger, each time they found work. Connie harvested so many different crops, including cotton, asparagus, tomatoes, beets, cucumbers, raspberries, strawberries, peaches, grapes, apples, green beans, pears, cherries, potatoes, and hops. The hardest to pick were beets and cucumbers because they were so low on the ground. Eventually, her family ended up in Outlook, Washington, where she met her beloved husband, Jose Becho.
Jose and Connie were married on January 23, 1968. After being separated for a year while Jose was serving in the US Army in Vietnam, they made a home in Granger, Washington. A few years later, they moved to Grandview, Washington and still reside there today. Jose and Connie just celebrated their 56th wedding anniversary. Connie was a stay at home mom while her kids were all young. She always dreamed of being a mom. She worked hard and earned her GED after all of her kids were in school. She sorted cherries at Holtzinger Fruit and Snokist during the summers to keep busy. Her full-time job was working at Harriet Thompson Elementary School as a teacher’s aide. She retired after 20 years.
Connie was preceded in death by her parents, her brothers Rogelio (Roy), Roberto (Bobby), Mario, baby brother Hector, and her baby sister Dora. Connie is survived by her husband, Jose, her five children Josie (Julio) Peña, Mario (Tierney) Becho, Abel (Melissa) Becho, Raquel (Waverly) Moore, and Andrea (Josh) Bass, along with her 13 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her 12 brothers and sisters.
Connie was kind, loving, patient, funny, thoughtful, hard-working, determined, and selfless. Her love for God was apparent, as a devout Catholic, and she loved her family fiercely. She was always thinking about other people - asking how her kids were doing, her grandkids, her in-laws, and even the pets in the family. She always remembered to send birthday and anniversary cards. Connie loved to cook and bake for everyone, especially for Jose. Her specialty for him was tortillas, frijoles, fideo, and arróz. She enjoyed baking cakes and pies for his sweet tooth. She was a master at making tamales, and famous for firing the help (her kids/grandkids and husband) if their work was not up to her standards. She liked to collect plants, porcelain dolls, and oil lamps. She loved to go to the casino and play the slot machines! She was such a busy body and didn’t know how to sit still. If it was summertime, she was outside watering the lawn, gardening (she had a green thumb), planting flowers and vegetables, and pulling weeds. She loved to go to yard sales; she couldn’t pass up a good bargain! During the colder weather, she would be inside tending to her many inside plants, sewing, crocheting blankets and hats, quilting blankets for her kids and grandkids, and dancing to Mexican music in the kitchen while cooking and baking. She watched a LOT of soccer, baseball (she loved the LA Dodgers), and fastpitch softball. When her kids were young, she coached them in soccer with her youngest on her hip, running up and down the sideline. Connie never learned to swim, so it was important to her that her kids and grandkids learned, so much so, that she made sure they had a pool at home. The kids were even on the swim team every year! As her grandkids began to play sports, she was the first to be in the outfield or on the sideline, cheering them on as often as she could. She also enjoyed taking pictures of the grandkids, flowers that she grew, the sky, and the mountains. She loved all of the beauty around her and tried to soak it in whenever she could. She loved music – any kind, but rock and roll and Elvis were her favorite as a kid. She loved to watch American Bandstand. She loved Mexican music and country music, and anything that had a great beat that she could walk to or bob her head to. She was an avid Price is Right fan, as well as Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy! You didn’t dare talk to her while she was watching her novelas (Spanish soap operas)! She was like a second mother to so many, including her kids’ friends, her grandkids’ friends, and people she worked with. She loved them all like they were her own and made sure that they knew they were loved. She was the Sheriff in town, and everyone knew it. She was one tough lady until the very end. It was an honor for anyone who knew her to have been a part of her life. She will be missed every day, but she is finally at peace.
Psalm 34:18 – The LORD is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.
