Charles Woods, 93, Passed away on October 12, 2017 at Brookdale Chesterley in Yakima, Washington
Charles was born on May 29, 1924 to Maurice and Nevina (Wilder) Woods in Portland, Oregon. He attended Carver Grade School and graduated from Oregon City High School.
In February 1942, Charles joined the Navy. After boot camp in Farragut, Idaho he was assigned duty on the Destroyer USS Abner Read. The fantail was blown off in Alaska and was towed to Bremerton, Washington for repairs. The USS then went to Leyte Gulf in the Philippines. A Japanese Kamikaze pilot sank the ship. Charles’ last ship was an aircraft carrier, the USS Bairoko.
After meeting on a blind date, Charles married Evelyn Mae Taylor on July 2, 1948 in Portland, Oregon.
After his service in the Navy, Charles found his most revered employment with U.S. Fish and Wildlife. He started raising fish at Estacada, Oregon. We later moved to Leavenworth, Entiat, Carson (son, Bradley joined us here), and Winthrup in Washington State. Yakima was the last stop and Charles began supervising the fish screens on the Roza Canal.
Most of our vacations were spent at Long Beach, Washington at the cabin, “U NEED A REST”, and fishing out of Ilwaco, Washington.
Charles has been a life member and loved playing cards at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 379 in Yakima, Washington. Pinochle was the name of the game.
Charles is survived by his wife Evelyn, son Bradley Jay (Kelli), grandson Nicholas, step granddaughter Leslie, and step great granddaughter Ashlyn.
At Charles’ request no services will be held.
