Brother Daniel Joseph Morgan, FSC
1957–2026
Brother Daniel Joseph Morgan, FSC, a De La Salle Christian Brother whose life was marked by a deep passion for students, a quick sense of humor, and an enduring curiosity about the world around him, died on September 26, 2026. Born September 10, 1957, in Portland, Oregon to Gordon and Mary Morgan. Brother Dan graduated from La Salle High School, Class of ’75, in Milwaukie, Oregon, before entering the De La Salle Brothers in 1976. He received the habit that same year and pronounced final vows in Sacramento in 1983.
Brother Dan earned a bachelor’s degree from Saint Mary’s College of California, a California teaching credential, a master’s degree in communications from the University of Portland, and a master’s degree in Catholic School Leadership from Boston College. Across more than four decades in Lasallian education, he served as teacher, student activities director, media director, director of studies, dean, principal, CEO, acting president, and school administrator.
His ministry took him to Christian Brothers High School in Sacramento; Saint Mary’s College High School in Berkeley; De La Salle High School in Concord; San Joaquin Memorial High School in Fresno; La Salle High School in Yakima; and De La Salle North Catholic High School in Portland. Whether leading a school or working directly with young people, Brother Dan remained first and foremost an educator. He delighted in students—their questions, their energy, their potential, and their ability to keep adults humble.
Those who knew Dan will also remember the humor and quick wit that was his way of accompanying his life with his family and friends, in the Brothers community, and in school ministry. His interests reached well beyond school walls. He was an avid sports fan of high school, university, and professional teams, seamlessly embraced all things technology, animating his educational ministry, and always preferred the road trip instead of a flight. Fittingly, his final assignment returned him to La Salle High School in Yakima in 2025, where he most recently had been serving as Acting CEO. Brother Dan helped to establish La Salle High School as Founding Principal/CEO in 1997.
For all he gave to schools and students, Brother Dan’s care for his vast community of former students and colleagues remained a defining way he lived his life as Brother. He treasured the relationships that grounded him and brought him joy. Last spring in Napa, at his Golden Jubilee celebrating his 50 years as a Brother, Dan spoke lovingly and grateful about the people God put into his life. His life reflected the Lasallian vocation he embraced as a young man: to accompany young people, build community, and make God’s loving presence known through education.
Brother Dan will be remembered with gratitude for a life generously shared—with his family, his Brothers, generations of students and colleagues, and the many school communities fortunate enough to call him teacher, leader, mentor, and friend.
Surviving Brother Dan are the De LaSalle Christian Brothers, his brothers Bill (LaVonne), Mike (Nancy), Richard, Pat (Kindra), sister Colleen Morgan, and many beloved cousins, nephews, nieces and their children, and the many students, alumni, faculty, friends, and extended family whose lives he changed for the better.
Memorial masses will be held throughout October—in Yakima WA (10/7), Berkeley CA (10/17), and Portland OR (10/21), with the Mass of Christian Burial on October 24th at Saint Mary’s College of California, in Moraga.
Remembrances are preferred to the La Salle High School, Yakima Legacy Fund or the Lasallian Christian Brothers Foundation, Napa, CA.
