Bernadine Febus, age 90, loving mother, grandmother, and best friend was called to her heavenly home on October 16, 2022.
Bernadine Pauline Searles was born December 9, 1931, in Toppenish, WA, where she resided most of her life. Her parents both passed away when she was a young teenager. She then went to live with her older sister. She graduated in 1950 from Toppenish High School as Valedictorian . Shortly after high school, Bernie met Robert (Bob) Febus at the roller rink and as fate has it, love brought them 49 years of marriage. Bernie and Bob enjoyed square dancing and gathering with family and friends.
In 1954, daughter Karen was born and three years later on Thanksgiving day, Jim. The family enjoyed many years of tent and trailer camping in the mountains, Oregon beach vacations and visiting family in Southern CA.
When her children began school, Bernie enrolled in Yakima Valley Community College and received her nursing degree. She worked at the Toppenish Hospital for many years caring for many of her hometown friends. After retirement, she volunteered in the gift shop. After Bob passed away, she moved to Zillah and lived close by Jim. She had a great group of friends which she traveled with to the East Coast and Hawaii. Her “Red Hatter” lady friends enjoyed many lunches and outings. She loved camping with Jim and Karen at Wallowa Lake, OR. She loved her grandchildren, animals, birds, people watching, gardening, and DQ Blizzards. She had a huge heart of gold with kind and compassionate spirit.
Bernie was a devoted Christian. Her faith in God was strong. In her early years she taught Sunday school and later years, enjoyed her Bible study group. She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Toppenish and Faith Community Church in Zillah.
Bernie is preceded in death by her husband, Robert Febus, her parents and sisters. Bernie is survived by her daughter, Karen (Bob) Leonard, of Beaverton, OR, Jim (Mary Kay) Febus, of Richland, WA, grandchildren: Krista Leonard and Eric (Lydia) Leonard, and her niece, Shawn Ripchick of Long Beach, CA.
