Aurora Escobar, 74, of Sunnyside, passed away on July 24, 2013. Aurora was born in Carrizo Springs, Texas on February 23, 1939. Aurora was married to Jose Luis Escobar on December 2, 1958, they were married 54 years. Aurora worked as a farm laborer for most of her life. She enjoyed cooking for family and friends, baking, tending to her garden, crocheting, quilting. She loved spending time and making special memories with her grandchildren, camping, fishing, baking cookies with them at Christmas time, and a special spot in her garden for the children to play in mud puddles. She often took the grandchildren on treasure hunts around the neighborhood followed by picnics with them. She always said let children be children. She was a woman of great faith, a lifelong parishioner of St Joseph’s Church in Sunnyside. She prayed the rosary and read the bible daily. She also served as a Eucharistic Minister for many years. Anyone who came to her house was made to feel welcome and immediately felt like they were at home. Affectionately, she became known to many as “Grandma or Mom.” Aurora is survived by her husband, Jose Luis Escobar. Six (6) children, Juanita (Juan) Aguilar, Joe (Paulette) Escobar, Mike (Karen) Escobar, Angela (Mario) Flores, Nick Escobar, Lisa (Jorge) Castillo. Twelve (12) Grandchildren, Gracie (Tony) Martinez, John Michael, Alex, Michael Sean, Kristopher, Sonia (Jorge) Magana, Joshua, Sammy, Daniel, Tristin, Andrew and Sofia. Her siblings, Angela Melendrez, Rosa (Charra) Garza, Abelia Ramirez, Julia Melendrez, Mary Moser, PeeWee Cortez, Richard Melendrez, Cruz Amaro, Carmen Reyes and Santa Myers. Aurora is preceded in death by her mother and father, Alfonso and Petra Melendrez, Brothers, Alberto Melendrez, Ramiro Melendrez and Nicolas Melendrez. Granddaughter Stephanie Nicole DeLeon. Viewing and visitation will be held on Monday, July 29th from 1 pm to 8 pm with a rosary at 6 pm at Valley Hills Funeral Home, 531 S. 16th Street in Sunnyside. Mass of Christian burial will be held at Saint Joseph Catholic Church on Tuesday, July 30th at 10 am. Burial will follow at Lower Valley Memorial Gardens in Sunnyside. Funeral arrangements are being handled by Valley Hills Funeral Home in Sunnyside.
