Anita Sampson Lewis, 88 We’lul choo Born August 29, 1934 in Satus, WA and passed August 17, 2023 in Yakima, WA Her parents were the late Charles Yumpquitat Sampson and Bessie Iula Pachpe Sampson. She raised in the mountains of timber at a young age by her paternal grandparents Thomas Yumpquitat Sampson and Asmak’t Millie Beavert Sampsom. Anita was sent to boarding school at the age of six at Chemawah. Not knowing a word of English and not understanding the reason why she had to endure punishments for speaking her own language. On the passing of her paternal grandfather she was brought home to finish her education at the Granger school district. Anita worked in various field jobs and business admin jobs which lead to her moving to Lawrence , KS to attend Haskell Indian Junior College. She received her A.A . Degree in Business Administration 1974 from Haskell. This led to a long history of her employment with Yakama Nation for many years till diabetes had her retire. She enjoyed the mountains, riding horses, parades at Ellensburg Rodeo in the 1940’s. Her time with her grandparents was one she always had stories of to tell her Children on to her great grandchildren. Now, she rides again in those beautiful mountains with her horses “Flashy Boy”. She was pre deceased by her parents Charles & Bessie Sampson, her sister Carmen Jean Sampson and her brothers Gary Sampson, Elliottt Sampson and Charles Arthur Sampson and Son Carter Herbie Jim. Great Grandsons Eric R. Pebeahsy and Tyson J. Wahchumwah. Grandson Frank Jim. Anita is survived by her children Connie Jim and Sandra Jim of Toppenish; Jeanne Smiskin (Harry) of Wapato. Her Sisters Shirley Sampson, Harriet Young, Madeline Sampson. William J Lewis, Jr of the Dalles OR, Glen R. Lewis (Alfrieda) of Toppenish and Carl D. Lewis (Chris) of the Dalles, OR, Aunt Larena Sohappy. Grandchildren; Diane Pebeahsy, Robyn Pebeahsy, Victoria Jim , Jaclyn (Trevor) Ferguson and Nichole (Baby P) Pebeahsy, Trisha Lewis Kramer, Amanda Lewis. Great Grandchildren;Andrew Kramer, Josh Kramer, Danielle Kramer, Carmen Selam, Reed Sekaquaptewa, Helen Sekaquaptewa, Mia Pebeahsy Tahmalwash, Kimberly Wahchumwah, Janelle Ferguson, Nash Ferguson, Trey Ferguson, Mack Ferguson, along with numerous great great grandchildren, nieces & nephews. Dressing will be Monday, August 21st at 10 am at the Satus Longhouse with overnight services. Burial August 22, 2023 at Beavert Cemetery leaving the longhouse at 7am. As mom heads for “ The last round up”, her family thanks each and everyone who sent prayers and songs to the family.
