Marjorie Oravetz
Our beloved Marjorie Oravetz, died peacefully Thursday morning at her home. Her family is so grateful that she believes in Jesus as her savior and is now in heaven. She was 76. She was a wonderful wife, mother, and grandmother.

Marjorie was born in Salem, Oregon and spent most of her childhood growing up in Puyallup, WA. She and her two brothers loved growing up on a farm and enjoyed keeping the farm and household running while parents worked elsewhere. She learned to be a great cook while just a teenager. She was not a great athlete, but enjoyed skiing while in high school. After graduation from high school she proceeded to get her registered nursing degree and license from Tacoma General. While in school she met and later married Harry Oravetz from Curtis, WA on December 15th, 1951.

Just after they were married, they went to East Saint Louis for Harry to get his degree in Aeronautical Engineering. While there, they struggled to make ends meet, and Marjorie worked as a nurse full time to put Harry through college. We remember many stories about eating “Bean Soup”. After Harry graduated from college they moved back to Seattle to start their family and John, their first son was soon born in January 1955.

Marjorie became a full time mother and gave up her career in nursing to raise her two sons. Steve, her second son came along two years after John. They continued to live in the Seattle area until 1960 when they moved to Ephrata, WA for work reasons. In 1962 they moved to San Jose, CA where they stayed until 1983, then they moved to Vacaville CA. Then in 1999 they moved to Yakima to be closer to her sons and grandchildren who live there. Her husband Harry and son John and his family still reside in Yakima. Her son Steve and his family live in Missoula, MT. Marjorie has five grandchildren, Amy, Daniel, Logan, Benjamin, and Jessica.

Marjorie loved to read books of all kinds. She loved her yard where she grew rhododendrons, roses, and vegetables. Marjorie enjoyed entertaining close friends with her wonderful meals. She was fond of travel, however her trips to Europe and Israel were highlights in her life. Marjorie enjoyed shopping and looking for the best bargains and giving gifts to others. She managed the household quite well, keeping up with day to day activities as well as investments and managing apartments for many years. She wrote many letters to everyone, and especially enjoyed receiving letters and cards, too.

Her memorial service will be held at Westside Baptist Church where she enjoyed attending their services. A light lunch will be served after the memorial service. Donation may be made to Westside Baptist Church, 6901 Summitview Ave. Yakima, WA 98908.

Jesse Lee Withrow
After a long illness, Jesse Lee Withrow, 81, of Union Gap, peacefully left this earth on September 20, 2007 to join his parents and several siblings in heaven. Jess was born July 10, 1926 in Poplar Bluff, Missouri to Clyde and Addie (Asher) Withrow, the second of twelve children. Jess attended school in Poplar Bluff, but left school to work and help his family. When he was only 13, Jess went to work on a dairy farm. At 15 he began working as a baker for Toellner Bakery. Later he became a route salesman for the bakery and continued working there for 20 years.

Jess was a Golden Gloves boxing champion before he joined the Army during the Korean War. While the rest of his unit was sent to Korea, Jess was kept in Germany to work as a baker. While in Germany, Jess had the opportunity to stand at attention for 8 hours for Dwight D. Eisenhower before Eisenhower returned to America to run for president.

Jess met and married Melba Estes in Hernando, Missisippi in June 1956. Together they raised three daughters on their farm in Hillard, Missouri where they also raised cattle, horses, and pigs.

Jess and his family moved to Washington in 1966, where he settled in White Swan and worked as a heavy equipment repairman for Webb Logging. He worked at Webb until they closed, then went to work driving a service truck for Inland Machinery. In 1968, Jess and Melba bought the Shady Lane Motel in Union Gap. While Jess spent much of his time traveling throughout the northwest, Melba oversaw day-to-day operation of the motel. In 1975, he left Inland and took a job as a Heavy Equipment Repair instructor at the Fort Simcoe Job Corps where he was able to share his love of repairing heavy equipment with the many students whose lives he touched. He formally retired in 1991, but often returned to Fort Simcoe to substitute or visit his friends. During his retirement, Jess enjoyed helping his wife run their motel.

Everyone who knew Jess knew that he was always a devoted family man who enjoyed spending time with his daughters and grandchildren, but after he retired he was able to devote more time to being a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He attended all of his great-grandchildren’s athletic events, school programs, spelling bees, and awards assemblies.

Jess was always an active man. While living in Missouri, he belonged to the Jaycees, served on the local school board, and was president of the Wrangler Riding Club. After moving to Washington, Jess was a proud member of the Operating Engineers Local 302 union. Not only did Jess participate in community activities, he was an incredibly dedicated St. Louis Cardinals fan. If there was a Cards game on TV, you better believe you’d find him watching it. Even though he was sick over the past few years, his eyes would sparkle when he talked about the Cardinals, especially when they won. Jess and Melba were also avid rodeo fans. They attended the Ellensburg Rodeo and Pendleton Round-up for over 30 years, never missing a year. They also enjoyed attending the National Finals Rodeo in Oklahoma City and Las Vegas.

Jess is survived by his wife, Melba Withrow; three daughters: Diane (Brian) Janz, Rebecca Withrow, and Patricia (Jack) Garner; four grandchildren: DJ (Jennifer) Baldoz of Puyallup, Amber (Robert) Masters, Jason Baldoz, and Jackson Garner; nine great-grandchildren: Olivia Schantz, Cole, Alexandra, and Madeline Masters, Giovanni, Daniel, and Anthony Baldoz, and Brooklyn and Jackson Garner; brothers Elmo Withrow and Ron Withrow of Poplar Bluff, MO; sister Lorene Condor of Grassy, MO; sisters-in-law Bethann Withrow of Yakima and Lorene Withrow of Poplar Bluff, MO; sisters-and brothers-in-law, Wanda (Daniel) Leslie, Dorothy (Lonnie) Campbell, Peg (Cliff) Orr, Pat (Archie) Curtsinger, Judy (Daniel) Johnson, and Kathy Fast, and special lifelong friends James (Leonard) and Ruth Pickett, who could be counted on to visit Jess regularly to talk with him and help with his care.

Jess was preceeded in death by his parents, Clyde and Addie Withrow; his brothers, George, Earl, Glenn, and Freddy Withrow; his sisters, Dorothy Withrow, Helen Harris, Roberta Marks, and Pansy Nicoloni; his in-laws, Milburn (Bus) and Elsie Estes; and his special nephew, Rick Withrow.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, September 25 at Valley Hills Funeral Home in Terrace Heights, followed by entombment at West Hills Memorial Park. After the services, friends and family are invited to celebrate Jess’s life at a reception held at the VFW.

Together they raised six children, a daughter, Linda and five sons, Ronald, Roger, Cory, Glen and Kenneth, she had fourteen grandchildren, Camille, Crystal, Brandon, Dustin, Colleen, Brandon, Cortnie, Christopher, David, Shannon, Dean, Kasey, Amy, and Kevin and several great grand children. Mom and Dad built and operated Harrington's Ceramics. Mom's easy going ways made our house a fun place for our family and most of the neighborhood kids. For many years the Ceramic shop was filled with a bunch of great gals and a few brave guys who got together as much for the coffee and witty conversations as for the ceramics. She will be missed by many whose lives she touched in some small way over the years. We miss you Mama!!!

If you'd like to make a donation in Anna Harrington's name, please make it to Children's Wishes and Dreams.

Gene V. Conner
YAKIMA - On Sept. 6, 2007 a special man left this Earth for a better place that is free of pain. Gene passed in his sleep at home surrounded by family after a brief battle with cancer. Gene V. Conner, 75, was born in Yakima on October 31, 1931 to Gene Conner and Pearl Houston Conner; educated at Willow Lawn Grade School and Highland High School. He married his High School sweetheart Anna Chott in 1951 while serving with the Armed Forces in Texas. After developing an apple orchard in the Columbia Basin in the late 1950's, he returned to the Yakima area to serve as manager of Yakima Implement Co. in Wapato for nine years. He then returned to farming in the West Wapato area. He enjoyed his work and took pride in producing a quality product. He loved and respected the great outdoors... Spring was a time of new growth and Summer and Fall a time for harvesting crops. He also enjoyed flying; held a private pilot license and was a former member of the "872 Flying Club." (May you soar the Heavens on angel wings!)

He loved his dog, "Gus" and enjoyed traveling with his wife of 56 years, having visited England, France, Italy, the Vatican, the Amazon Jungle and the Western United States in recent years. Retirement was not for Gene; he had to be busy. In 1996 he and Anna moved to Arizona and built a custom home; they resided there for ten years - traveling in the summer to escape the excessive heat, then enjoying the mild Arizona winter. In 2006, they returned to Yakima, "God's Country" and built another custom home in Terrace Heights.

He is survived by his loving wife, Anna, his sons Robert (and Sandy Wilson) of Vancouver, WA, Michael of Seattle, WA, Jim (and wife Angie) of Apache Junction, AZ, and daughter Kathleen of Mesa, AZ; also his Aunt Frances Cotelos of Yakima and many nieces and nephews by marriage. We will each remember Gene in our own way but all will remember him as a man with ambition, integrity, pride and self-respect; personality traits that made up his character. We are so proud to call you "Husband" and "Dad". You have always been and will continue to be our rock.

The family suggests memorials to Sundown M. Ranch, P.O. Box 217, Selah, WA 98942. Thank you God for giving him to us - Now, keep in him your care. Bless you, Peg Coble from Hospice for your compassion, understanding and guidance.

Join us for a memorial lunch Saturday, Sept. 15 at 1:00 p.m. at China Buffet, 2616 W. Nob Hill Blvd., Yakima.
